Epsom Derby Ladies' Day: Frankie Dettori wins The Oaks as thunderstorm thrashes racecourse

for the first day of the world famous festival on Friday.

Ladies' Day always sees thousands of women dressed to the nines in stunning dresses, elaborate hats and ornate fascinators.

Meet the trainer behind the Investec Oaks winner Enable: John Gosden

Born in Lewes, John Gosden is son to the late trainer Towser.

After being educated at Cambridge University, he worked in Venezuela before returning to Britian to assist Newmarket trainer Sir Noel Murless before setting up as one himself in 1979.

This is only his second win in the Oaks following his success in 2014 with Taghrooda.

Meet the jockey for Investec Oaks winner Enable: Frankie Dettori

Frankie Dettori is an Italian jockey who has been on the British horses racing scene since the 1980s.

This is his fourth Oaks victory after successes in 1994, 1995 and 2002.

In December 2000, he was awarded an honorary ME and is the most successful current jockey at Royal Ascot with 56 successes.

Meet the Investec Oaks winner's owner: Khalid Abdullah

Born in Saudi Arabia in 1937, Khalid Abdullah is a semi-retired businessman who presides the Mawarid Group.

Despite his official title being Prince Khalid Abdullah he prefers to be called Mr K Abdullah.

He developed a keen interest in British horse racing in the 1960s and has only won one other Oaks race (1997 with Reams of Verse).

Enable wins the Epsom Oaks

Enable has won the 2017 Epsom Oaks.

Jockeyed by Frankie Dettori, the Italian guided the horse over the finish line for his first win since 2002.

The win denied Aidan O’Brien a third successive win in the race as horses Rhododendron and Alluringly came second and third respectively.

The Oaks should have started but there’s been another drama.

Pocket Full of Dreams was spooked by a clash of thunder and knocked Donnacha O’Brien off.

Don’t worry, he’s fine and back on the horse.

Jockey falls off horse

Jockey Olivier Preslier suffered a nasty fall while warming up Daddys Lil Darling.

Trainer Kenneth G. McPeek was concerned about the welfare of the jockey and his horse.

Fortunately, neither sustained any injuries after checks from a doctor.

Weather update

It is now raining here in Epsom.

The thunderstorm was due at around 1pm on Friday afternoon (June 2) but has appeared shortly before the Investec Oaks race.
