Euro 2016 daily: France want to set tone, strikes hit, England descend on Marseille

France's first game of Euro 2016 is against Romania at 8pm BST. France haven't played competitive football for two years. Didier Deschamps wants his team to set the tone for the whole tournament. France won the World Cup in 1998 on home turf. There were suicide bombs at the Stade de France back in November. The team wants to reassert itself at this stadium.

France is hosting Euro 2016. There are strikes in Paris and Marseille. Trains are cancelled. Air France pilots are taking to the picket line on Saturday. England are visiting Marseilles.  Prime Minister Manuel Valls wants the tournament to be a showcase for France.

70,000 England fans are expected in Marseille for Saturday's match against Russia. England supporters were involved in violent clashes with Tunisia supporters and French riot police in the same city during the 1998 World Cup. Everton fan Darren has come to Marseilles for four days and has no tickets. He has been to a few tournaments with England and hasn't seen any trouble.

France are the favourites to win the opening game against Romania. England are preparing to play in Marseille. Romania went through qualification unbeaten and will be at full strength after Florin Andone and Denis Alibec recovered from knocks.

Paul Pogba and Nicolae Stanciu are both 23-year-old players. Stancieu made his debut for Romania in March. He has scored four goals in five games.

Jonathan Wilson found the Bataclan unexpectedly. He booked his hotel last summer, several months before the massacre that killed 89 people. There is no obvious security presence in Paris ahead of the opening game between France and Romania. There are sirens and security getting into the media areas at both the Parc des Princes and the Stade de France. It is similar to the World Cup in Brazil.

Eric Cantona has been appointed as the Commissioner of Football. He has already made his first ruling ahead of Euro 2016. Eric Dier posted a video of himself and John Stones from the England team hotel.
