Ex-Mets star has unique take on pressure facing Yankees’ Aaron Judge

New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge made history last year.

And now, he returns to work as the reigning AL MVP, fresh off a year in which he broke the single-season American League home run record. It’s easy to assume there’s at least a little pressure following a season that featured slew of accomplishments.

Judge also enters this year as the newly named Yankees captain. And former New York Mets third baseman David Wright knows something about the pressure that comes along with the captain title.

“You have to deal with the pressure from both parts: being captain and living up to the contract,’’ Wright said, per Martin. “It should be just outside pressure, but it’s tough because you’ve got this big new deal that you want to live up to and, on top of that, as captain, you don’t want to stink because your words might mean less if you don’t play well. … There’s enough pressure to perform in this game, and you try not to put more on yourself because of other things, but it’s impossible not to.”

Judge returns to the Yankees on a record-setting nine-year, $360 million contract. The slugger said no to a seven-year, $213.5 million contract before Opening Day, then went out and had a walk season for the ages, setting an American League record with 62 home runs, contending for the Triple Crown and being named AL MVP. The Yankees also named him the club’s 16th captain.
