Ex-Red Sox pitcher, Justin Verlander are Dodgers’ ‘top targets’ (report)

The Los Angeles Dodgers sit atop the National League West standings with a 59-45 record on MLB trade deadline day, but they’re still looking to bolster their starting rotation despite acquiring Lance Lynn from the Chicago White Sox.

And one of their top-two targets includes a former Boston Red Sox southpaw.

According to the LA Times’ Jack Harris, Eduardo Rodriguez and Justin Verlander are the Dodgers’ “top targets.”

“Plan A is a pursuit of New York Mets ace Justin Verlander — a potential blockbuster deal that remains on the table ahead of Tuesday’s 3 p.m. Pacific deadline, but will require the teams to bridge gaps on both the prospect return the Dodgers would send to New York, as well as how much of Verlander’s contract the Mets are willing to pay down,” Harris wrote.

Plan B could be a pivot to Detroit Tigers left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez — a 30-year-old veteran who is having a career-best year and could become a free agent this winter,” he added.

Rodriguez is 6-5 this season with a 2.95 ERA. The lefty missed all of June with a finger injury and has a 5.66 ERA since returning from the injured list. He signed with the White Sox ahead of the 2022 season after six seasons with the Red Sox.

The San Diego Padres, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, are also said to be in the mix for Rodriguez, and “could make a push” to acquire him.

Verlander’s name has been in trade talks all week. The three-time Cy Young Award winner questioned the direction of the New York Mets after they traded Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers over the weekend. Verlander said he couldn’t help but question what that also meant for him and his time in New York.

Rumors of a reunion with the Houston Astros have been floated around, as well.

The MLB trade deadline is 6 p.m. EST on Tuesday.
