Seleçao can build on impressive start

Brazil have taken the early lead in Group F of the Women’s World Cup after their emphatic 4-0 win over Panama in their first match, but France, looking to make amends for their goalless draw against Jamaica in their opener, will provide a sterner test.

The French have dominated their rivalry with the Brazilians down the years and are unbeaten in all 11 international meetings with the Seleçao.

But six of those 10 games have ended in draws and Brazil appear to be better than ever under their Swedish head coach Pia Sundhage.

The Swede has strengthened the Brazilians defensively – and Ary Borges, who scored a hat-trick in their 4-0 domination of the Panamanians, highlighted that the Seleçao now also have greater attacking weapons at their disposal.

In that win last Monday, Brazil suffocated their opponents and racked up 32 shots. They have lost only three of their previous 19 internationals in normal time.

During that period, the Brazilians have suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to the United States, the World Cup favourites, while also holding Euro 2022 champions England to a 1-1 draw in the Women’s Finalissima at Wembley, eventually losing on penalties.

That highlights how far the South Americans have progressed in recent years. The game on Saturday could be a good chance to show that improvement against a France side who were frustrated by Jamaica in their opening assignment.

That was the second consecutive match in which Herve Renard’s side failed to score. And the French could also be more vulnerable defensively in the absence of captain and centre back Wendie Renard, stricken by a calf injury.

Debinha could play a starring role

Borges stole the show for Brazil in their opening win over Panama with a brilliant hat-trick, but Debinha is a key component for the Seleçao and may grab the headlines against France.

The 31-year-old has plenty of experience at international level, highlighted by her 58 goals in 135 appearances.

The Brazilian No 9 lasted only an hour against the Panamanians but that rest should ensure she is fit and raring to go against France. Debinha has had a strong season with Kansas City Current, scoring six goals in 12 starts for the National Women’s Soccer League outfit.

Her craft and guile will ask plenty of questions of a French back line minus star performer Renard.

Attacks likely to come to the fore

Given the amount of attacking flair on show and the magnitude of this fixture, each side are expected to make their presence felt and get on the scoresheet.

Back both teams to net as part of a 11/2 bet builder.

The second leg of the punt is over 9.5 corners, which looks likely given both like to play on the front foot and utilise their width. France racked up 12 corners in their opening game while Brazil managed 13.

With what is on the line, backing over 2.5 cards could also prove profitable. There were three cautions when these two teams met last year, and five in the encounter before that.
