Frankie For Mishriff Breeders' Cup Swansong

Frankie Dettori will ride globetrotter Mishriff for the first time in more than two years in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland on Saturday.

The Racing Post reports that the five-year-old, trained by John and Thady Gosden, will be having the final start of his career at the big international meeting and will stand under the Sumbe banner in France in 2023.

Mishriff had been the regular mount of David Egan until the rider lost his retainer with owner Prince Faisal in July. Dettori last partnered Mishriff when eighth in the Champion Stakes at Ascot in October 2020.

Mishriff’s international exploits include wins in the 2021 Saudi Cup and Dubai Sheema Classic, with his last victory coming in the Juddmonte International at York later that year.

Mishriff finished second in the same race to Baaeed this year, filled the same spot in the Coral-Eclipse and came a close fourth in the Irish Champion Stakes.

He was last seen finishing 13th in the Arc at Longchamp, with James Doyle, Colin Keane and William Buick the jockeys to have ridden him since July.

Gosden snr, who won the Breeders’ Cup Turf with Enable in 2018, said: “Frankie Dettori will ride Mishriff in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland on Saturday. He’s ridden him before and has had a sit on him a couple of times at home of late.”

Mishriff is a best-priced 13-2 with bet365 to land the Breeders’ Cup Turf, with the betting headed by Saratoga Derby winner Nations Pride and Preis von Europa scorer Rebel’s Romance at 11-4. They are trained by Charlie Appleby, who won the race last year with Yibir.

Seven of the last ten runnings of the Breeders’ Cup Turf have gone to European-trained horses, with Tarnawa, Highland Reel, Found and Talismanic among the winners since 2012.
