French Open Day 4 Picks & Predictions For Alcaraz vs Daniel & More

The second round of the French Open kicks off on Wednesday with 32 matches spanning the men’s and women’s singles tournament. 

The day’s action promises to be exciting, the tennis-betting card jampacked. All eyes will be on tournament favorites such as World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, 22-Grand Slam champion and No. 3 Novak Djokovic, No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, and No. 5 Caroline Garcia, amongst others, as they look to advance into the third round. But there are many other matches to spot as well.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Taro Daniel

Despite a tight third set, World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz looked to be in full control of his tournament opener as he dismissed qualifier Flavio Cabolli 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 in the first round. 

Next up is dangerous floater Taro Daniel of Japan. The 30-year-old is known to punch above his perceived weight class on occasion, notching upsets over top players such as Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev this season already. Though doing it against the No. 1 player and the oddsmakers’ favorite to win the French Open title is a big ask.

Novak Djokovic vs Marton Fucsovics

World No. 3 Novak Djokovic will look to extend his bid for a record-setting 23 Grand Slam title at the expense of Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics. Djokovic owns the 4-0 head-to-head record between them, but the Hungarian has been able to win at least a set in three of the four matches.

Corentin Moutet vs Andrey Rublev

Buckle up for what should be a heated, intense contest between two of the game’s most expressive players. France’s Corentin Moutet is a slightly controversial figure who knows how to get under his opponent’s skin. And he’s likely to rally the partisan crowd behind him.

Moutet, who is nursing a right hand injury, managed to defeat compatriot Arthur Cazaux in four sets in the R128. What stood out was his ability to adapt to a one-handed backhand in lieu of his injury.  

Russia’s Andrey Rublev needed four sets to dispatch Laslo Djere 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in his tournament opener. The No. 7 ranked Russian is passionate, expressive and wears his emotions on his sleeve. While he has the more complete game and the power to hit Moutet off the court, he’ll also need to keep it together and ignore Moutet’s antics if he hopes to come through as the favorite here.

Sebastian Ofner vs Sebastian Korda

American Sebastian Korda, who recently returned from a wrist injury which he suffered in January, lodged a confidence-boosting, straight-set win over compatriot Mackenzie McDonald in the first round.  Next up is 27-year-old journeyman player Sebastian Ofner in the second round.

Although there are lingering doubts about Korda’s fitness and how deep he’ll go in the draw – under any other circumstance, the supremely talented American would be a dark horse contender in Paris – he’s worth backing over Ofner for a spot in the R32.

Camilla Giorgi vs Jessica Pegula

America’s No. 1 Jessica Pegula put in a comprehensive performance in the first round, dropping just a handful of games in a straight-set win over fellow American Danielle Collins.  In the next round, she faces a much tougher opponent in Camilla Giorgi, who advanced behind a straight-set win over French veteran Alize Cornet. 

On paper, Pegula ticks all the right boxes. She has the overwhelming 7-2 H2H overall and the 3-0 edge on clay over Giorgi. That said, five of their seven matches have gone the distance, including their last meeting in Indian Wells. 

French Open Best Bet: Giorgi (+4.5)

Caroline Garcia vs Anna Blinkova

France’s Caroline Garcia survived a three-set marathon (7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4.) against Xiyu Wang to set up a rematch against dangerous floater Anna Blinkova in the R64. The pair last met in the R64 of  the 2019 French Open with Blinkova sending Garcia packing in three sets.   

Although that was during a low point in Garcia’s career, it doesn’t take away from Blinkova’s legitimate upset credentials. The Russian is coming off a runner-up finish in Strasbourg and she’ll fancy her chances against Garcia, despite the French women’s renaissance in the women’s game.

Iryna Shymanovich vs Aryna Sabalenka

World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka is determined to let her tennis do the talking. After steamrolling Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, expect her to do much of the same to qualifier Iryna Shymanovich, who is making her grand slam debut in Paris.
