From Ighalo to Bebe and Michael Owen... Man Utd's most bizarre transfers ever ahead of January loan for Wout Weghorst

Wout Weghorst is set to join Manchester United on loan. It's not the first time a United signing has raised eyebrows in the January window.

Odion Ighalo joined Manchester United on a six-month loan from Shanghai Shenhua in 2020. He failed to score in the Premier League but did score crucial goals in FA Cup and Europa League. Igalo left the club for Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal in 2021.

Wout Weghorst joined Manchester United on loan in January.

Bebe joined Manchester United from Victoria Guimaraes for £7.4m in 2010. He was only 20 at the time and Fergie only met him a day before the transfer. Bebe spent three loan spells at Benfica and one at Rayo Vallecano.

Michael Owen was offered a pay-as-you-play deal by Fergie to replace Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United. Owen stayed at Old Trafford as a fringe player for three years. He scored important goals for United, including a hat-trick away to Wolfsburg in the Champions League group stage and a last-minute winner in a 4-3 win in Manchester derby in 2009.

Dong Fangzhuo is the only Chinese player to play for Manchester United. He was signed from Dalian Shide in 2004. Dong scored 34 goals in 71 games over two seasons. In January 2007 he was given a squad number for the first time. His contract was terminated in 2008 after he played just one start and two sub appearances.

Henrik Larsson signed for Manchester United on a short-term loan. He will return to Sweden in mid-March to start the local season with hometown club Helsingborgs.

Man Utd signed Manucho from Petro Atletico in January 2008. He was loaned to Panathinaikos and Hull before getting a work permit. Manocho made one Premier League appearance for Hull and then left for Real Valladolid in July 2009.

Vanja Milinkovic-Savic is a target for Manchester United. He was signed by Lazio in 2014 for £1.55m from Vojvodina. Milinksovic Savic was released in 2015 after failing to secure a work permit.

Andy Kellett joined Manchester United on loan in 2014-15. He played for the reserve team and lost to parent club Bolton in the Manchester Senior Cup. Now he plays for non-league Guiseley.

Lee Grant was released by Stoke in 2018 and signed by Manchester United. He was third choice goalkeeper behind David de Gea and Sergio Romero. Grant's debut came against former club Derby in the League Cup, but they were knocked out via a shootout. His first start came a year later in a Europa League defeat at Astana.

Peter Beardsley played for Manchester United before Newcastle. He made one appearance for the Red Devils before moving to Canada. Beard's future England star Wout Weghorst is on loan at Manchester Utd.
