THE LOWDOWN

FROSINONE

Frosinone could well become a bit of a yo-yo team in Italian football as they returned to Serie A last season, gaining promotion from Serie B as champions last season. They have moved on from the manager that got them up last season with Fabio Grosso, 2006 FIFA World Cup winner with Italy, being replaced by former Roma boss Eusebio Di Francesco, who has the intention of playing a fast and fluent style of football.

I Canarini began the 2023/24 Serie A campaign with a 3-1 defeat at home to reigning champions Napoli last weekend. The newly-promoted side went a goal up early on via a penalty from new signing Abdou Harroui but Matteo Politano and a brace from last season’s Capocannoniere, Victor Osimhen, sealed an opening day defeat for Frosinone.

ATALANTA

In recent seasons, Atalanta have had to reinvent themselves away from probably the second incarnation of Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta side. However, finally, they do appear to be ready to attack Serie A after some impressive business in the window, reinvesting the Rasmus Hojlund money into some very interesting additions such as El Bilal Toure, Gianluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere.

The days of Gomez-Zapata-Ilicic are behind us but the Bergamasci, with players such as Ademola Lookman only getting better too, have a very talented and impressive squad. They began the 2023/24 campaign with a comprehensive and comfortable 2-0 win away at Sassuolo, with De Ketelaere scoring on debut as well as a late clinching strike from Nicolo Zortea.

THE TEAM NEWS

FROSINONE

Eusebio Di Francesco does have to deal with the absence of both Karlo Lulic, due to injury, and goalkeeper Stefano Turati due to suspension for blasphemy.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Cerofolini; Marchizza, Romagnoli, Monterisi, Oyono; Harroui, Mazzitelli, Gelli; Caso, Cuni, Baez

UNAVAILABLE: Turati (Suspended), Lulic (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

ATALANTA

Gasperini’s Atalanta have some defensive issues with centre-backs Jose Luis Palomino and Rafael Toloi injury doubts, as well as Hans Hateboer. New signing El Bilal Toure will also be missing from this one.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Musso; Djimsiti, Scalvini, Kolasinac; Zappacosta, de Roon, Koopmeiners, Pasalic, Ruggeri; Lookman, Zapata

UNAVAILABLE: Palomino (Injured), Hateboer (Injured), Toure (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Toloi (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Frosinone are without their key man, Stefano Turati, at the back and they face an Atalanta side that will head into the season as genuine outsiders for the Serie A title race. The Bergamasci have created a squad, by design or accident, that has a lot options and a lot of depth, especially going forward. Gasperini’s side will always play on the front foot and whilst Frosinone are likely to be a competitive side this season, they have a tough test once again after facing the champions last weekend. An away win is expected in Florence.
