Gary Neville makes Man United v Liverpool Premier League title prediction

Gary Neville picked who was more likely to win the Premier League title out of Liverpool and Manchester United. He admits it’s a tough one.

Rewind a year and it seemed that Liverpool were unstoppable. They were, after all, well on their way to taking a quadruple chase to the wire.

This season has seen a remarkable drop-off, however, and they’re now 10 points behind Manchester United. That’s a United side that struggled for form all of last season and looked miles off of the Reds.

Gary Neville believes the drop-off has been so severe, in fact, that United are now more likely to win the Premier League next than Liverpool. That’s what he told the Liverpool Echo this week.

“I would again say United are more likely to win the title next,” said Neville. “If you ask me will Liverpool win the league again under Klopp, the answer is I don’t know.

“Who are Liverpool’s new owners going to be? Is there going to be new investment in the club? And how much is it going to be?

“If they have Jurgen Klopp as a manager and there’s a £200m or £300m transfer war chest in the summer, of course they could go and win it again.

“But if they don’t spend big in competing with [Manchester] City, Chelsea and United, then you’re making Jurgen Klopp’s job a lot harder in terms of winning the league.”

Liverpool and the Premier League title

Neville does admit in the interview that he made the same prediction a few years ago – before Klopp led Liverpool to the title in 2020. He was wrong then and could well be wrong again.

But it’s hard to argue against. United are moving forward, but Liverpool continue to move backwards. Their roles have reversed.

And without a lot of investment this summer, it’s hard to see how Liverpool get back on track. They’ll need a complete restructuring of their midfield – something that’s possible but incredibly difficult.

Pull that off, though, and Klopp will have Liverpool marching towards a Premier League title again. We have little doubt about that.
