The 22/23 Serie A season is finally upon us and after Napoli’s domination last season, many people will be hoping for a closer season. On matchday one, Genoa will welcome Fiorentina to the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris for their first game back in the top flight following their promotion from Serie B last season. Last season, Fiorentina enjoyed a solid enough season and ended up finishing in 8th position the Serie A table. Vincenzo Italiano, the Fiorentina boss, also led his side to the Europa Conference League final where they lost out to West Ham in Prague. Despite selling their star striker, Arthur Cabral, to Benfica, Fiorentina should still have too much firepower for the newly promoted Genoa and therefore we are predicting an away win.

Italian football isn’t exactly renowned for goal fests and these two teams very much live up to the stereotype. Neither of them averaged more than one goal a game last season while Genoa’s defensive record was particularly impressive with an average of less than one goal conceded per game. Both sides have offensive concerns so a goalless draw isn’t out of the question. Either way, backing against the BTTS  market is the smart play here.

First half – Over 0.5 goals

Despite just saying that a goalless draw wouldn’t surprise us, we believe that the most likely chance of goals will come in the first half. In five of Fiorentina’s previous seven competitive fixtures, a goal has been scored in the first 45 minutes while the same can be said for each of Genoa’s previous four. An early goal followed by a parked bus for winning team feels like the order of the day here.

Fiorentina’s financial woes have been well documented this summer which has resulted in them losing star striker, Arthur Cabral, and defender, Igor, for big money. They have managed to keep hold of Sofyan Amrabat, for now at least, and the Moroccan will likely play in this one as his proposed move to the Premier League hasn’t progressed in recent weeks.
