Gold Cup 2024 prize money: How much is up for grabs and what will winner earn in iconic Cheltenham event

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is one of the biggest events in horse racing and there is plenty of money on offer.

It is one of the most lucrative in the UK, and several owners will walk away with tens of thousands of pounds.

The Gold Cup can turn horses, jockeys and trainers into heroes because of its prestige.

Rachael Blackmore and Paul Townend are two jockeys who have done so in recent years, earning themselves money and fame.

Gold Cup 2024: Prize money

Sixteen horses are set to compete in this year's Gold Cup, with a prize pot of £625,000 being split between the top five.

The winner will take home £351,688, which was claimed by Des Champs' owner, Mrs Audrey Turley, last year.

Second place walks away with £132,500, third takes £66,312, fourth comes away with £33,125 and fifth bags £16,625.

This makes the Gold Cup the most lucrative jumps race in the UK and Ireland bar the Grand National.

How much do the jockeys win?

Jockeys often only take a small percentage of any prize pot, which is between eight and nine per cent.

If they place, they also still take some of the earned money, but it's usually only about 3.5 per cent.

There is also a standard fee for taking part and for jump races that is set at £164.74.
