Golf Legend Phil Mickelson accepts crossing line with betting addiction

NEW DELHI: Just weeks after the release of a tell-all book that unveiled his extensive gambling endeavours, Phil Mickelson has announced his decision to abstain from wagering on football games for the upcoming season. Mickelson's revelation comes in the wake of a disclosed betting addiction, which was laid bare in the book authored by renowned Las Vegas gambler Billy Walters, hitting the shelves on August 23.
The book not only revealed Mickelson's substantial losses amounting to nearly $100 million due to his betting habit but also shed light on a five-year gambling partnership between Mickelson and Walters. Among the book's claims was an accusation by Walters that Mickelson attempted to place bets on the 2012 Ryder Cup. However, Mickelson vehemently denied these allegations, underscoring his commitment to preserving the integrity of the sport.
However, Mickelson's announcement on Monday was unrelated to golf. He took to Twitter, now "X," to issue a warning to those considering turning to sportsbooks during the football season.
Addressing his followers, Mickelson cautioned, "Most of you will enjoy this football season with moderation while having lots of fun and entertainment. The fantasy leagues will provide banter amongst friends and money won or lost betting won't affect you." He continued, "I won't be betting this year because I crossed the line of moderation and into addiction which isn't any fun at all."

The six-time major champion made it clear that financial concerns were not the driving factor behind his decision. Instead, he emphasized the detrimental impact his betting habit had on his relationships. He stated, "The money wasn't ever the issue since our financial security has never been threatened, but I was so distracted I wasn't able to be present with the ones I love and caused a lot of harm. This lack of presence has been so hurtful."

Mickelson extended his message to caution others against following a similar path, highlighting the importance of recognizing the line between moderation and addiction. He urged individuals facing addiction not to mistake enablers for friends and to seek help from supportive partners.
A statement from Mickelson reveals that he has been receiving professional assistance for several years. He is presently not engaged in gambling activities and is in the process of repairing relationships strained by his previous betting habits.
He concluded with a heartfelt plea, "This football season and beyond, enjoy yourself with moderation so it doesn't detract from your ability to be present. In my experience, the moments with the ones you love will be far more remembered than any bet you win or fantasy league triumph."
