Grand National Entries 2024: Gaillard Du Mesnil the major omission as 94 remain

A record 61 of 94 remaining entries for the 2024 Grand National are trained in Ireland.

Last year's third and the National Hunt Chase winner at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, Gaillard Du Mesnil is the notable omission among 94 entries for the Grand National 2024.

As short as 12/1 to win the race this morning, the Willie Mullins-trained Gaillard Du Mesnil has run 19 times and has yet to finish outside the top three - winning five times, as well as making the frame 14 times.

Despite finishing seven lengths adrift of Corach Rambler at the line, he ran an excellent race to finish third in last year’s Grand National, which came after winning the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival a month earlier.

This three-time Grade 1 winner, with two of those wins coming over hurdles and the other coming over fences, has also made the frame in two other races at the Cheltenham Festival and finished third in the 2022 Irish Grand National.

Grand National Entries

The 2023 Grand National winner Corach Rambler is among the ante-post favourites for the Grand National 2024 after initial entries for the race closed this lunchtime.

The 94 entries also included the other ante-post market leaders for the big one at Aintree on Saturday 13th April - Mahler Mission, Vanillier and Monbeg Genius (20/1 on Ladbrokes).

Lucinda Russell’s stable star Corach Rambler, who also landed last year's Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham, is set to run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup next month.

Should he even threaten a surprise against 10/11 favourite Galopin Des Champs, odds on for Cheltenham's blue riband event, he is likely to become favourite for the Aintree highlight as he bids to defend his title.

He currently shares a 16/1 best price with Mahler Mission and Vanillier, with Corach Rambler the only one to hit a shortest mark of 12/1 on Coral.

Mahler Mission battled with Gaillard Du Mesnil in last year’s National Hunt Chase and looked the likelier winner into the home straight before a miscommunication between rider and horse resulted in him taking a heavy fall at the penultimate fence when five lengths clear.

Grand National Winner Odds on Ladbrokes

  • Mahler Mission - 14/1

  • Corach Rambler - 14/1

  • Vanillier - 16/1

  • Monbeg Genius - 20/1
