How Was The 2023 Grand National Won?

A hugely competitive field of 39 runners went to post for the 2023 Grand National, but it was dominated by the Lucinda Russell-trained CORACH RAMBLER who produced an absolutely stunning performance to storm to a two-and-a-quarter length victory over Vanillier, with Gaillard Du Mesnil back in third as Scotland reigned supreme in the Aintree event.

Sent off the 8/1 favourite, Corach Rambler headed to Aintree on the back of a fine win in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and patiently ridden by Derek Fox the nine-year-old cruised to the front as they jumped the last fence and he was not for catching. Nicky Henderson's Mister Coffey ran an almighty race on the front end, but as he tired in the closing stages it was Corach Rambler that took up the lead and he stormed several lengths clear of the rest of the field and pretty much put the race to bed.

The Willie Mullins-trained pairing of Vanillier and Gaillard Du Mesnil stayed on eye-catchingly in the closing stages to grab the silver and bronze medals, respectively, while former winner Noble Yeats completed the 1-2-3-4, but it was Corach Rambler that was a top class winner of the 2023 Grand National and duly hand the deadly duo of Russell and Fox a second win in the race after the pair teamed up with One For Arthur back in 2017.

October Form Pointers

Reigning Grand National hero Corach Rambler made his hotly-anticipated return to the track at Kelso in late October, where he lined up in the Edinburgh Gin Chase, but the class act failed to play any part in the finish as he was a distant fifth behind Elvis Mail, who looks a potential improving stayer to watch this season. Held up in the rear as is custom, the nine-year-old failed to make any ground on the leaders and was well beaten, but in the aftermath trainer Lucinda Russell was quick to say he would certainly improve for the run and is still one to watch this season with a potential Cheltenham Gold Cup tilt on the menu come March.

While Corach Rambler may not have fired on all cylinders on his comeback run one horse that did impress was Gordon Elliott's Gevrey, who was a fine winner of the Munster National at Limerick and could be one to follow over staying distances this season. Beating Largy Debut by over two lengths, Gevrey, who was second in the Irish Grand National last season, shaped like he could be one that makes into an Aintree type and is a very smart contender for the Cullentra House team.

November Form Pointers

Third behind Corach Rambler and subsequent Punchestown Gold Cup winner Fastorslow in the Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham, Jonjo O'Neill's Monbeg Genius was touted as a leading Grand National contender in 2024, but he failed to fire on his first run of the season in the Sodexo Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Ascot.
