Gulfstream’s Championship Meet Underway Monday

Gulfstream Park's Championship Meet at Gulfstream gets underway Monday. The first of 71 days of racing is highlighted by the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1), $1 million Curlin Florida Derby ( G1) and $400,000 Fountain of Youth (2).

Tropical Park Derby and Tropical Park Oaks kick off a stakes schedule featuring a total of 60 stakes, including 35 graded events, worth $13.6 million in purses. Monday’s stakes for 3-year-olds will be among 31 stakes races scheduled for Gulfstream”s new turf course.

Gulfstream’s Championship Meet Underway Monday. The Pegasus World Cup Invitational, a 1 1/8-mile event for 4-year-olds and up, will be renewed on a program with six graded stakes on January 28. Curlin Florida Derby, the tradition-rich 1.1/2-miles Triple Crown prep for 3-years-old, is renewed for April 1 with 10 stakes.

Gulfstream’s Championship Meet starts Monday. Jockey Luis Saez is defending his title. Irad Ortiz Jr. and Javier Castellano are also competing. Saffie Joseph Jr., who dethroned Todd Pletcher to claim last year”s training title, will defend his first Championship meet title this year.
