Horse racing predictions: Goodwood, Perth and Listowel

There are five meetings across the UK and Ireland on Wednesday, three Flat and two National Hunt.

Redcar (1.00-4.53pm) and Goodwood (1.15-4.35) provide the afternoon action on the level, with jump racing at Listowel (1.40-5.35) and Perth (1.52-5.55). The evening all-weather card comes from Kempton (4.40-8.15).

Wednesday’s nap steps up in trip and drops in class for the Goodwood feature event and is fancied to oblige for the Marcus Tregoning team.

Horse racing tips: Goodwood 2.52

The feature on the card is the Listed Foundation Stakes over 1m 2f and it represents an ease in class for Marcus Tregoning’s PEROTTO that he may well seize.

The New Bay gelding showed improved form in June to score over 7f here and follow up under a penalty to win the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot off a mark of 99. Another 6lb penalty made life tough in Newmarket’s Bunbury Cup in July but he has since done well in three group-race cstarts.

He was no match for the ultra-impressive Baaed in a Group 3 here over a mile at Glorious Goodwood in late July but has twice run well since behind Magellan at Salisbury and Lavender’s Blue back here in the Celebration Mile.

In that most recent visit to the Sussex Downs, he shaped as though stepping up in trip would suit. He gets that now and does so dropped to Listed company. He may make it count under Jason Watson.

Horse racing tips: Perth 3.00

Ruth Jefferson and former champion jockey Brian Hughes team up with CLONDAW CAITLIN in this 3m staying hurdle and the lightly raced mare is fancied to show she has more to come this season.

A Wetherby bumper winner at the second attempt, she won her first three starts over hurdles in late 2019 and early 2020 and made a more than solid attempt on her seasonal return last time when third behind subsequent Festival winner Galvin in a novice chase at Cheltenham in October.

She wasn’t spotted again until March where she finished a rallying second back over timber at Newcastle (2m 4½f, good). That was off a mark of 135 and lumping weight to the winner.

She is proven to go well fresh and that Cheltenham effort 11 months ago hints this trip will be just fine for her. As a six-year-old, she’s taking on more exposed rivals here and, up a further 2lb, she can make a winning return to action.

Horse racing tips: Listowel 4.25

The Guinness Kerry National is the highest-profile target Gordon Elliott has been able to aim at since he returned last week and is, of course, the feature race in the week-long Harvest Festival at Listowel.

The Cullentra trainer has a four-pronged attack on the first prize of £90,000 in a race that has been good to him in the past and FARCLAS could be best placed of them.

The 2018 Triumph Hurdle hero is a three-time winner over fences, though not since the summer of 2019. He has, however, started just five times since then and it's not hard to draw positives from last season’s efforts when he returned from some 522 days away.

He was placed in a £75,000 Dublin Racing Festival handicap in February on his third run back and then chased home The Shunter at the Cheltenham Festival (2m  4½f, good to soft). He ended his season finishing fifth in the Aintree National under Jack Kennedy, when his stamina appeared to give way in the closing stages after a fine effort.

He should be primed for a tilt at this prestigious race on his seasonal return and dropping back to three miles looks a smart move. Off a mark of 148, he looks competitive and his case is aided by Jordan Gainford taking off 5lb.
