Portugal can maintain perfect start

Roberto Martinez has had a strong start as head coach for the Portuguese, who are sitting pretty at the top of their Euro mini-league with a maximum nine points from the first three fixtures.

The former Belgium boss failed to deliver a trophy with the Red Devils’ golden generation but is looking to have more success with the former European champions.

Portugal have defeated Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, scoring a total of 13 without conceding, and on that form at both ends of the pitch are obviously formidable visitors for Iceland tonight.

The hosts go into this game on the back of a 2-1 defeat on home soil by Slovakia last Saturday – and the Portuguese are a much sterner test.

Given their recent defensive record, a victory for Martinez’s men without conceding looks worth considering at 11/10.

Iceland vs Portugal tip 1: Portugal to win to nil @ 11/10 with Boylesports

Ronaldo can strike first again

Portugal have played Iceland three times in their history, with the initial meeting in October 2010.

Cristiano Ronaldo has played in all those games and was the first player to score in this fixture nearly 13 years ago.

Bagging the opener after just three minutes, he set Portugal on their way to a 3-1 win in a European Championship qualifier at the same stadium where tonight’s match is being played.

Ronaldo, getting set for his 200th international game today, would love nothing more than to celebrate this historic appearance with yet another goal.

Having scored four times in Portugal’s three Euro 2024 qualifiers so far, Ronaldo – now plying his trade at club level with Saudi side Al Nassr on an estimated €200 million a year until 2025 – is priced at 2/1 to net first in Reykjavik.

Expect goals but few corners

Looking at the bet builder options, going with over 2.5 total goals and under 7.5 total corners could be the way to go.

Considering Portugal’s free-scoring form at present, with 19 goals in their previous five games, the visitors look capable of scoring at least three goals on the night.

When it comes to corners, even against beatable opposition in Luxembourg, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, in their past two outings, the corners have not been forthcoming.

There were six in both of Portugal’s previous two games. Going for under 7.5 total corners tonight, along with over 2.5 total goals, brings in a price of 16/5.
