Innisfail’s Nathan Flewelling wins home run derby at Canadian Futures Showcase

Innisfail’s Nathan Flewelling got the opportunity of a lifetime and took full advantage.

From Sept. 19-23, Flewelling competed in the ninth-annual Canadian Futures Showcase in Rogers Centre put on by the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Academy.

Over 170 amateur players from across Canada took part in the tournament, which splits players evenly into six teams, to play in front of college and professional baseball scouts.

Throughout the five days, the six teams played each other in a tournament-style format which concluded with a prospects game and a home run derby.

The 16-year-old was the only Albertan out of eight participants in the home run derby. He put on a show hitting 11 home runs, six in the final round to win the derby in the home of the Toronto Blue Jays.

In a recap on MLB.com, the Gonzaga University commit didn’t hold back his excitement following his electrifying performance.

“It’s just an incredible honour,” Flewelling said. “It means everything to me to be part of these 175 players in Canada, and to be considered one [at] the top, it just doesn’t feel real right now.

“It’s one of those times that [help] you realize why you love the game and why you keep playing every day.”

Earlier in September, Flewelling took part in a Prep Baseball Report workout in Sylvan Lake with high school players in Alberta and following that was ranked fourth in the class of 2025 rankings.
