Inside Wakefield Trinity's team huddle as Dave Fifita explains mentality after crucial loss

David Fifita insists Wakefield's race is not run after their damaging defeat to Castleford Tigers on Friday. The Big Bopper was part of the Trinity side that fell to defeat to their West Yorkshire rivals, leaving them two points adrift at the bottom of Super League with just five games of the season remaining.

Many believe that loss has condemned Wakefield to relegation but offering a defiant stance, Fifita was keen to point out this is familiar territory for the team, having found themselves staring at a similar reality last year when they battled it out with Toulouse Olympique.

They succeeded in surviving that year and while the odds are now against them, that was the message being delivered when the players got together on the field in the moments after the hooter sounded at the end of the game.

"Everyone needs to have a good look at themselves and see where we went wrong," Fifita said. "We had a big huddle at the end of the game there and we said the next five weeks are the biggest of our life really. We have to stick together through this and they're positive in there after. We've just got to get through this s*** then focus on Salford, you can't even focus on the next five, you've just got to take it a week at a time.

"Look, we've been here before, they were six points ahead of us and they've only gone two ahead of us this time. It just gives us that cat-and-mouse feeling again. They all wrote us off last year when Toulouse jumped us by two points. There's no stress at the moment, there are five games, anything can happen if we stick together."

Meanwhile, Fifita confirmed he would be around until the end of the season - or until Wakefield are safe.

"I should be around for the full season," he confirmed. "As much as I need to get back with the family, and the sooner the better, but if we can jump them and get back to safety, but until then, I'm here for the long run."
