Inter Milan must be "realistic" about Serie A title ambitions

Italian media expect that Inter Milan will have to be “realistic” about their chances of winning the Serie A table.

Today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, take the position that the Nerazzurri’s attack in particular will not make them obvious favourites for the Scudetto as some have predicted.

Serie A is arguably the hardest league among Europe’s top five to predict a title-winner for at this point in time.

Four separate teams have won the title over the past four seasons – Juventus, Inter, AC Milan, and Napoli.

Therefore, few have been so bold as to name any one club as the big favourites.

However, the Nerazzurri do have the status of odds-on betting favourites.

This is a reflection of a view that many hold that Inter’s squad is still the strongest in Serie A. Moreover, the style of play that the Nerazzurri employ under Simone Inzaghi has won no shortage of admirers.

Over the past two seasons, Inter have failed to win the Serie A title, finishing second and then third.

However, there has been an impression that this was an underachievement. Many pundits and analysts have argued that if Inter didn’t drop off at inopportune times, they’d have won at least one of the past two league titles.

Therefore, many feel that the pressure is on Inter.

At their best, the Nerazzurri do look capable of winning the Serie A title. Therefore, the big question will be whether or not the Nerazzurri can maintain their best form, or something close to it, over a full season.

Inter Must Be “Realistic” About Serie A Title Aims

According to Tuttosport, however, the summer transfer window has cast further doubt on Inter’s title ambitions.

The Nerazzurri have both lost several players and brought in several in their place.

Among the new arrivals are exciting and relatively young players like Davide Frattesi and Marcus Thuram,.

However, Tuttosport argue, Inter’s squad hasn’t gotten better. It has at best made a sideways move in terms of quality.

Moreover, the newspaper emphasizes, the Nerazzurri have particularly dropped off in quality in attack.

Last season, Inter had fairly reliable goalscorers like Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku to call upon.

This time around, they’ll have to hope they can rely on Marcus Thuram and Marko Arnautovic.

In the view of Tuttosport, there are now real questions about Inter’s edge in the final third. If Thuram doesn’t settle in quickly or Arnautovic loses a step, they may look more than ever like a team who can dominate ball possession but not turn it into goals.

Therefore, the newspaper argue, the Nerazzurri should think twice before they set the agenda of winning the title.
