South Africa have the forwards to cause Ireland problems but the Irish hold onto the ball for long periods, which could cause an issue in the South African defensive system.

With Ireland being at home, I am backing them to cover the -4 handicap in a tightly fought encounter.

  • Ireland have won 6 of their last 8 matches.
  • Ireland beat South Africa in their last encounter by 35 points.
  • Ireland are the no.1 ranked side in world rugby.
  • South Africa have won their last 3 matches.

Head to Head

South Africa have won four of their last seven matches against Ireland but Ireland won their last match 38-3 back in 2017.

Ireland Form

Ireland come into the end of year incoming tours in fine form. Earlier this year they finished second in the Six Nations, four points off France. Their only defeat came away against the French.

It got better from there as Ireland achieved their first ever victory and then series victory in New Zealand. After Ireland got hammered in the first test, they won the second 23-12 and the third 32-22 to secure the series win.

These results will give the Irish a huge confidence boost coming into this match against the World Champions. They have not faced the Springboks since 2017 so there is little history to go on.

Ireland Injuries & Team News

Ireland come into this match ranked as the best side in the world. Conor Murray makes a surprise return to the starting lineup and will partner Jonny Sexton. Joey Carbery is on the bench as is Jamison Gibson-Park.

South Africa Form

South Africa lost out on the Rugby Championship on points difference to New Zealand. That will disappoint the world champions after some very iffy results.

After beating New Zealand on the opening weekend, they lost the following week to the same opposition. The Springboks also lost their first game against Australia and although they bounced back to beat the Wallabies a week later, the damage was done.

South Africa ended the campaign with two victories over Argentina, home and away. The Springboks will want to prove their credentials once again with the World Cup looming next year.

South Africa Injuries & Team News

Cheslin Kolbe starts at fullback upon his return from injured. With Handre Pollard still injured Damian Willemse continues at flyhalf. His goal kicking will certainly be a concern.
