Irish Derby a tantalising puzzle as Epsom form is put to the test

Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby takes place in 153 years. Anthony Van Dyck is favourite to win the race. Madhmoon and Broome are the other contenders. Gibbs Hill returns from 724 days off the track in the Betfair Exchange Northumberland Plate Handicap (3.35). Gibbs is supported from 20-1 to 7-2.

Anthony Van Dyck won the Irish Derby at Epsom. Madhmoon and Broome were held up off a strong pace set by Sovereign. The field at the Curragh is eight. Kevin Prendergast is trying to add his name to a trophy his father Paddy won four times between 1950 and 1965.   The trophy has been returned to Ballydoyle after just two of the last six renewals. It was once very strong, but it has loosened since 2012.

Irish Derby is the seventh of eight races on a Curragh card. Arizona won't be running in the Irish Derby, but he will take part in a Group 2 Gain Railway Stakes (4.40). Wolferton winner Addeybb will race in Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Full Of Surprises International Stake (3.30).

Dettori is back in town after break and takes two rides for Mark Johnston in his home town of Newmarket today. He will take on former Group 1 winners Limato and Suedois. Invincible Army is the favourite in Newcastle's Group 3 Betfair Exchange Chipchase Stakes (2.25).

Gibbs Hill has been off the track for a long time. He has only raced three times during Theresa May's leadership. Gibbs Hill is starting in the Plate, a 19-runner marathon.

Gibbs Hill hasn't raced since 27 days ago. Roger Varian has his horses rated 105+ in the Northumberland Plate since 1998.

Wells Farhh Go is back after a 311-day absence due to a stress fracture. He is one of four runners in the Randox Health Fred Archer Stakes (3.50) at the same course as his Bahrain Trophy success last year.

King's Advice is six-for-six since moving to Mark Johnston. Noble Behest is on his third trainer in the same time frame. King's advice is looking for another win in Northumberland Plate at Chester. The last of Noble behest's wins was a dead-heat off a mark of 76. Angel Gabrial is owned by Dr Marwan Koukash.
