A seriously competitive race here and the case can be made for nearly all of the field. Bookmakers are offering extra places which will be helpful for each-way punters and there is one in here I think is worth backing that I can't see out of the frame and has an excellent win chance. Ben Pauling's YOUR DARLING has more than halved in price as the week has gone on as racing fans have cottoned onto both his claims and the importance of him getting a weights hike if he is to participate in any handicaps at the Cheltenham Festival. Last time out he was just found out for stamina and now the Pauling team, who are in great form this year, know his optimal distance we will hopefully see him run much more like he did in a romp at Ascot on his penultimate start.

Despite a rise in the weights since then it looks a shade lenient to me and with Your Darling needing to at least be close by the finish to get the required pounds to squeak into a Cheltenham handicap, he is worth backing/ As mentioned there are plenty of rivals with claims, not least Il Riddoto who is the fancy of my colleague Steve Chambers (read his thoughts here) and the favourite Fugitif. At bigger prices Coole Cody would make appeal were it not for the suspicion he is using this as a tune up, and Spiritofthegames seems to perpetually hit the frame without winning so at 18/1 could be a good each-way option.

This race always sees a seriously stamina laden novice come to the fore while a host wilt under the pressure in behind. Despite the promise of good ground up in Yorkshire it will still be a massive test for the inexperienced runners and backing one you must be sure their stamina and toughness is without question. This is certainly the case for GRAND SOIR, who looks the archetypal staying chaser in the making. A huge frame of a horse and with a lazy running style, no distance has seemed to test him whatsoever yet. In his latest success at Thurles he never looked interested until hitting the straight and being put under some pressure. His trainer John McConnell won this race last year with Mahler Mission and looks to be targeting it with his strongest novice again in 2023.

The ground is another plus in the selection's column and the same can be said for favourite Stay Away Fay, but with Grand Soir nearly double the price and to my eye looking to have more improvement to come as his stamina is stretched, he is the natural choice for a bet. At bigger prices Twig looks interesting for Ben Pauling, while Mahons Glory is another who looks a touch overpriced on the back of a good win at Aintree back in October. Grand Soir however looks to me the most likely winner, far too big of a price and is a confident pick.

PEMBROKE did not exactly begin life over hurdles in outstanding style when finishing a disappointing 7th behind Tahmuras at Chepstow, but the rate of improvement from the Skeltons novice and potential for more from him makes him the right favourite here. Three weeks on from his hurdling debut blip. he looked much more like the horse he had promised to be in his exciting bumper season, cruising away to win a novice hurdle at Wetherby on heavy by six and a half lengths. Both his jumping and temperament looked markedly improved but what came next was what really stamped him out as high class under a penalty.

Next time out at Ludlow he devoured his rivals and despite being eased up still won by 16 lengths! This first attempt at an intermediate trip looks to hold no fears and is a sign of things to come potentially with his Festival target undecided. Winning as he did on different ground than ideal at Ludlow, while also carrying a penalty, has made Pembroke to my eyes one of the most exciting novices in Britain this season and I can't wait to see him again. Hopefully he confirms the promise and takes this prize, because for all there are some likeable rivals set to take him on, Henri The Second for team Ditcheat in particular, it is only Pembroke so far who has shown star quality. At the current prices he is a fair bet.
