Despite a Thin Grass Resumé, Sinner a Favorite

Sinner, still just 21, only won his first career match at Wimbledon a year ago. And despite that, he’s third on the list of favorites to win it all, behind only No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and defending champion Novak Djokovic.

It’s clear even for the Wimbledon publicity machine that he’s considered the future. He’s front-and-centre on a poster full of legends. And that’s been confirmed by his plum court assignments so far during the fortnight.

And yet, the highest-ranked player Sinner has beaten on grass this year was No. 39 Lorenzo Sonego at Halle.

It’s not as though he doesn’t have a Wimbledon title in his future. But all seems quite premature.

The Sweetest of Draws

Sinner has been helped by a dream draw on his way to the final eight – he’s faced no one in the top 80. He defeated Juan Manuel Cerundolo (No. 111) in the first round, Diego Schwartzman (No. 98) in the second round, Quentin Halys (No. 79) in the third round and Daniel Elahi Galan (No. 85) in the round of 16. He has lost just one set (to the first one to Halys). But it would have been a shock had it been otherwise.

For Safiullin, who hadn’t even played a main-draw ATP match on grass before a month ago, it’s been an impressive run.

First up was No. 20 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, a fine grass-courter, in a five-setter played over a few days. Next came the crafty French lefty Corentin Moutet. Then another lefty, Guido Pella, who is currently ranked outside the top 300 after a long injury layoff but who is a former top-20 player.

After that, a shocker over former Wimbledon semifinalist Denis Shapovalov, who will rue letting a golden opportunity slip by.

So Safiullin’s learning curve has been steep, and successful.

The gulf in accomplishment between the two is vast. But Safiullin can be a dangerous opponent for Sinner, if he has any doubt at all.

Safiullin is a solid, solid player and competitor. That was the biggest thing that got him through the match against the far more talented but far more volatile Shapovalov.

He’s also not too tall, compact and low to the ground and a speedy, smooth mover. On grass, that’s a big attribute.

Great things have been predicted from Sinner since he was 17 or 18. His rise to the top 20 was fairly swift; since then, it’s been more gradual and he remains a little on the spindly side physically. As that develops, he may well take the next step.

The biggest impediment to his title hopes, of course, is that he’s in the bottom half of the Wimbledon draw with Djokovic.

The Italian’s advantage is that despite his relatively paltry grass-court experience, he did make the quarterfinals last year and went five sets with Djokovic (and had him two sets to none before the Serb came back). So he has more to draw upon than Safiullin.

But he’s going to have to go out and be unmerciful, because his opponent is a calm, steady competitor.

Unlike Shapovalov, though, we expect Sinner to take full advantage of his draw.
