Jets vs Islanders Prediction, NHL Odds & Betting Picks (Feb. 22)

The Winnipeg Jets continue their road trip with a visit to the New York Islanders on Wednesday, Feb. 22. This meeting serves as the first clash of the 2022-23 NHL season between these foes. Winnipeg swept last season’s Jets vs Islanders series, making it interesting to see how tonight’s contest unfolds.

The Jets come into town following a 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Monday. Connor Hellebuyck was outstanding in goal, stopping 50 of the 51 shots the Rangers. Kyle Connor helped lead the offensive charge with three points while Mark Scheifele found the back of the net twice.

Meanwhile, the Islanders are back at home after splitting their two-game road trip. The good news is that they do have momentum stemming from a 4-2 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins in their last outing. Brock Nelson scored his 25th and 26th goals of the season as Ilya Sorokin turned made 44 saves on 46 shots for the win.

While tonight’s Jets vs Islanders contest should be an entertaining affair, there are some betting opportunities that can amplify that entertainment. Here’s a look at FanDuel Sportsbook’s latest odds for the game, as well as a prediction and the best bet to make, courtesy of Betting News.

Can the Jets Finally Beat the Islanders?

Facing the Islanders has been a tough task for the Jets in recent years. After all, Winnipeg has lost five straight games to New York, being outscored 19-8 in the process.

Last season’s series was anything but pretty. The Jets were shut out 2-0 on home ice before losing 5-2 to the Islanders on the road in the second matchup. Needless to say, the Jets are hoping for better results tonight.

Unfortunately, winning on the road has alluded the Jets more often than not as of late as well. They’re 3-5-0 in their last eight road contests and had lost three straight away games before their win against the Islanders.

The Jets’ power play struggled in those contests, only converting on six of their 33 opportunities (18.2%). However, there’s a chance that things could change tonight.

While the Islanders own the NHL’s No. 5 penalty kill (82.1%) this season, the unit is only operating at a 72.7% success rate over the last four games, allowing three goals on the man advantage over that stretch. Considering that New York averaged nearly three penalties in those contests, Winnipeg will likely have an opportunity or two to turn its PP around.

Another start from Hellebuyck would also improve the Jets’ chances of winning. He’s won three of his last four starts, backstopping to a 1.75 goals-against average and .949 save percentage. After his brick-wall performance against the Rangers, it’s hard to doubt Hellebuyck at the moment.

Islanders Aim to Remain Strong at UBS Arena

UBS Arena has treated the Islanders well as of late. After all, they’ve gone 4-1-1 in their last six games, most recently picking up a hard-fought 5-4 victory against the always-tough Pittsburgh Penguins.

Achieving victory tonight will be hard than usual, though. The Islanders will be shorthanded tonight with the recent news of Mathew Barzal being out of the lineup ‘indefinitely’ due to a lower-body injury.

Barzal’s presence will surely be missed as he currently ranks first on the team in assists (37) and second in points (51). For reference, New York has lost seven of the last 12 games that he’s missed.

On top of that, the Islanders are still without Cal Clutterbuck (upper body) and Oliver Wahlstrom (lower body) while Josh Bailey is questionable with an upper-body injury.

In addition to those injuries, Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin has been tough to predict lately. While he has two shutouts in his last eight starts, he’s also allowed four-plus goals on three of those occasions. The final result is a 2.88 GAA and .917 SV%.

The Islanders clearly need to band together to take down the Jets. New York may have had Winnipeg’s number recently, but the latter is clearly in a vulnerable position.

Jets vs Islanders Prediction and Picks

Jets vs Islanders Prediction: Jets 3, Islanders 2

Jets vs Islanders Picks: Jets ML (Best Value: -105 at FanDuel) & Under 5.5 Goals (Best Value: -110 at FanDuel)

Even though the Islanders have won each of the last five meetings, I’m backing the Jets tonight. Winnipeg is the healthier team and I’m counting on it to exploit New York’s recent special teams struggles. Having Hellebuyck between the pipes following a 50-save performance definitely helps, too.

I’m also siding with the total going under 5.5 goals. On top of the under being 13-4 in Winnipeg’s last 17 road games and 9-4 in New York’s last 13 at home, it’s also 4-2 in the last six Jets vs Islanders matchups.

With the total going under 5.5 goals in three of the last four meetings between these teams don’t expect a lot of offense tonight.
