John Millman vs Daniil Medvedev Predictions and Odds: Australian Open

Daniil Medvedev continues his 2023 Australian Open. The Russian, one of the pre-tournament favorites, will take on the experienced John Millman in the second round. Here are our predictions and odds for this match.

These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.

John Millman vs Daniil Medvedev Match Predictions

Not a lot to talk about here. Medvedev is the heavy favorite heading into this one. The Russian had a strong showing in his victory over Marcus Giron in round 1, and there is little reason to expect anything different. Millman is coming off a brutal five-setter, which also favors Medvedev.

Medvedev -9.5

Medvedev is playing at a very high level this January. After a slow finish to 2022, which saw the former number 1 drop out of the top 5, he has been picking it up again. In round 1, the Russian easily dispatched Marcus Giron in what was a much more difficult matchup compared to Millman.

Medvedev only dropped three games to the American, and we can expect a similar performance against the Aussie. While the line is a bit on the high side, I’m still backing the Russian to cover it.

Under 28.5 Games

Going by that same logic, this is most likely going to be a quick match. Medvedev’s round 1 match only had 21 games, and again, Giron was a much more difficult opponent compared to Millman.

Unless the Australian veteran manages to pull off a small miracle playing feeding in from the home crowd’s energy, expect Medvedev to wrap things in a relatively short time.

John Millman vs Daniil Medvedev

Let’s take a look at each of these player’s recent history, and what to expect from them in this round 2 matchup.

John Millman

Millman is near the end of his career. The popular Aussie received a wild card entry for the home tournament in what could possibly be one of his final appearances in Melbourne. Long removed from his best days, which saw him achieve a career high of #33 in the ATP rankings, the 33-year old veteran is now well out of the top 100.

That didn’t stop him from entertaining the home crowd once again. Millman pulled off a comeback win over Marc-Andrea Huesler, coming out on top of a five-set, four-hour marathon. This will be his fourth second round appearance in five years, which is a respectable mark.

Daniil Medvedev

Looking to shake off his bad run at the end of 2022, Medvedev has had a decent start to 2023. The Russian made it to the semifinals at the Adelaide International 1 without dropping a set, but was eliminated by Djokovic in straights.

Medvedev has some added incentive to do well in Melbourne. The Russian lost in the final to Nadal in heartbreaking fashion last year, marking his second consecutive runner-up finish at the Australian Open. With a lot of points to defend and a chance to interrupt the losing streak in the finals.

Millman vs Medvedev Head to Head

Surprisingly, this will be their first head to head encounter at the ATP level. Millman has a 1-19 record versus players inside the top 10, his only win coming in incredible fashion against Roger Federer during the fourth round of the 2018 US Open.
