J. Keeler Johnson shares his picks and plays for Thursday, Feb. 24 at Fair Grounds and Turfway Park.
Midweek Bet Back: Receive refunds on win bets if your horse finishes second in select races at Fair Grounds. Turfway Park $2,500 Jackpot Thursdays: Place $10+ win bet at TurFway for a chance to win a $500 weekly jackpot.
Fair Grounds: Race 7: $15,000 Maiden Claiming (six furlongs, 5:05 p.m. ET). Trainer Sam David has a 10-for-48 record saddling first-time starters at Fair Grounds since 2017. Trainer David's unraced three-year-old filly #6 Trafalgar Shore (8-1) is a daughter of elite sprinter Lord Nelson. Keeler Johnson will place a $10 win bet on Trafgar, and box her in the exacta with the class-dropping favorite #8 Have I Ever ( 8-2).
#5 Poca Mucha (3-1) has shown promising form since racing at Turfway Tapeta this winter. She won her last race by one length. Blood Curdling (6-2), Beam of Light (4-3), Peter’s Kitten ( 4-4), Guitty (20-5), and Myeerah (5- 1) are the other horses in Thursday's field.
#1 Rutabaga (7-5) looks like a standout in this maiden claiming sprint for fillies and mares. My Tommy Lee (4-1) is the fastest runner in the field. War Ensign (5-2), Waves ( 4- 1) and WarEnsign are the other horses to bet on.
Turfway Park, Race 8: $8,983 Super High 5 carryover (9:46 p.m. ET). The wager went unclaimed last Friday, resulting in a $1,653 carry over. The prize pool is on the table in Race8 for fillies and mares racing 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta. 11 horses have been entered, but only 10 betting interests are available. Trouble Making (5-2), the daughter of Into Mischief, is the best of the lot.
