Kentucky Derby and Oaks Roundup: April 4, 2022

There is less than a month until the Kentucky Derby (G1) on the first Saturday in May. The Kentucky Oaks ( G1), held one day before, is also rapidly approaching.

There were three Kentucky Derby qualifiers worth 100-40-20-10 points to the top four finishers. White Abarrio won the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. Cyberknife won in the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park and debuts in fourth place on the leaderboard with 100 points. Tiz the Bomb won Jeff Ruby Steaks ( G3) in Turfway Park by 2 1/4 lengths.

White Abarrio won the Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park. He is 2-for-2 this season. White Abrrio has 112 points and is second on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. Charge It, Simplification, and Pappacap are in the top six and occupy Kentucky derby qualifying spots.

Cyberknife won the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park. Barber Road and Secret Oath are in the running for the Kentucky Derby and Oaks.

Tiz the Bomb won the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park. He owns 110 points and is third on the leaderboard. JeffRuby runner-up Tawny Port (40 points, 16th place) is also positioned for Derby qualification.

The European Road to the Kentucky Derby wrapped up last Thursday with the running of the Cardinal Condition Stakes at Chelmsford City in England. Dark Moon Rising won the race, returning from a long layoff after competing on grass last season.

Summer Is Tomorrow is one of seven late Triple Crown nominees. She currently ranks 14th on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 40 points.

Dean's List ran a half-mile in :50.32 over the Belmont Park training track on Saturday.

Ethereal road won the 5 furlongs in :59.60 on Thursday at Oaklawn Park.

Forbidden Kingdom completed the seven-furlong workout in 1:26.60 on Thursday at Santa Anita.

Major General won the five furlongs at Palm Beach Downs on Friday in 1:01.73.

Mo Donegal ran five furlongs in 1:00.68 on Saturday at Palm Beach Downs.

Newgrange completed a half-mile workout on Sunday at Santa Anita in :47.80.

Smile Happy and Volcanic ran four furlongs in :49.52 at Gulfstream Park on Saturday and half a mile in 1:51.40 at Keeneland on Sunday. Zandon ran a four-furlong workout on Friday at Payson Park in:48.60.

Kathleen O. won the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) with 150 points. Yuugiri won Fantasy S. (3) at Oaklawn Park. Candy Raid won Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park by 4 1/2 lengths. Tap Dancing Lady and Catiche finished in a dead-heat for second place. Secret Oath is fourth on the leaderboard with 80 points and 20 Kentucky Derby qualification points from the Kentucky derby.

Kathleen O. won Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) with 150 points. She is a three-time stakes winner conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey.

Yuugiri won the Fantasy S. (G3) at Oaklawn Park. Beguine came second. Cincinnati Trophy S (S) winner Bubble Rock finished third.

Candy Raid won the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park. Tap Dancing Lady and Catiche finished in a dead-heat for second place. Neither is nominated to the Kentucky Oaks.

The Kentucky Derby and Oaks qualifiers are taking place this week. The Keeneland Kentucky Oaks qualifier is expected to draw Demoiselle S. (G2) winner Nest and Santa Ynez S ( G2). (3) Beaumont S is also expected in the Keenelon Kentucky Oakes qualifier. Saturday, Santa Anita Derby is a showdown of elite contenders. Sunday, Beumont is the final qualifier at Keeneloon. The final qualifiers at Aqueduct are Remsen S, Mo Donegal, Withers S and Gotham S .

Ashland S. (G1) at Keeneland is expected to draw Demoiselle S ( G2) and Santa Ynez S, (2G2), Awake At Midnyte. Blue Grass S has produced 23 Kentucky Derby winners through the years. Remsen S., Mo Donegal, Withers S,. Early Voting, and Gotham S are the main names targeting Aqueduct’s final Kentucky Oaks qualifier.
