Kitty's Light wins bet365 Gold Cup for Christian Williams a week after Scottish National as his daughter battles cancer

TIMES are tough for Christian Williams, but there is always Light at the end of the tunnel.

But the brilliant Kitty’s Light is doing his best to lift the family’s spirits, bagging them a second big race in the space of a week.

Last Saturday, he galloped to a famous win in the Scottish Grand National and just seven days on he followed up in the historic bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown.

Racing’s new iron horse is quickly becoming an all-time fan favourite, and by the sound of it he had plenty of supporters among the huge Sandown crowd.

He is just the second horse to complete the double after Hot Weld in 2007 - and there was rarely a moment's doubt.

The 11-4 favourite was hot on their heels three out and showing them a clean pair of heels shortly after the last, with young jock Jack Tudor beating the air in delight.

Racing pundit Hayley Moore ran the London Marathon last week for Cancer Research and had her medal engraved with Betsy’s name - which Williams was proudly wearing in the winners’ enclosure.

Williams said: “We’d had such a tough few weeks with Betsy and when we got up to Ayr the story was all about her.

“All the emotions came out when he won whereas today all the focus was just on the result.

“We showed our emotion at Ayr but today was purely a bonus, he’d come out of the race so well and we wanted to give him the chance to do something special.

“Hayley brought me the medal half an hour before the race so I’ve had it on since and it’s just great.

“We’ve got tough times ahead but we’re lucky to be involved in this sport and to see the joy it brings with Betsy and all the family at home. It’s all down to this horse.”

Elsewhere on the final day of the jumps season, Jonbon ran out an impressive winner of the Grade 1 Celebration Chase.

Nicky Henderson is going to campaign him over two-miles next season and is already looking forward to a rematch with El Fabiolo.
