Leylah Fernandez vs. Caroline Garcia Wimbledon odds: Canadian is an underdog in second round

Leylah Fernandez is off to the second round at Wimbledon after a marathon win over Kateryna Baindl.

The pregame narrative: Fernandez needed three sets but she overcame Baindl in the first round. The task gets much tougher against Caroline Garcia, a competitor with aspirations of a long run at the All England Club.

Fernandez vs. Garcia Wimbledon preview

Fernandez was triumphant in her first-round match, but the level of difficulty ratchets up several notches against Garcia.

Facing off against world No. 85 Baindl, Fernandez won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to advance. It was an erratic performance from Fernandez who was equal parts aggressive and careless. She had seven aces but committed 10 double faults. She fired home 36 winners but had 44 unforced errors.

This was just Fernandez’s sixth match on the grass courts in her career and her first-ever win at Wimbledon.

She will need to raise her level of play if she wants to succeed against Garcia.

The Frenchwoman is the No. 5 player in the world and is coming off a straight-sets victory over Katie Volynets.

Entering this tournament, Garcia was tied for the 11th-best odds to win the title. A big reason for that is her recent success on the green.

With her win over Volynets, Garcia is 15-5 on the surface since the start of 2022 and 50-28 in her career.

Garcia advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon last year, tying for her best showing at the tournament.

This will be the third meeting between these two, with both of the previous matchups coming this year.

Garcia and Fernandez battled on the hard courts at the Australian Open and Indian Wells, and Garcia won each contest.

Fernandez will need to find a way to break Garcia’s elite serve in order to be successful. She converted six of her 11 break-point opportunities in her win over Baindl.
