Smith’s fourth-round knockout win last January still ranks as one of the year’s biggest upsets, and now, Eubank must respond if he hopes to salvage his career.

This time around, boxing odds slightly favor Smith to repeat at -160, whereas Eubank is a +125 underdog.

Liam Smith vs Chris Eubank Jr. betting preview

Once again, Chris Eubank Jr. fell apart under the pressure of the bright lights as Liam Smith walloped him inside four rounds last January. Smith, a former junior middleweight champion, put a dent in Eubank with the first shot he landed and stopped him soon after. It was a career-best win for Smith, who is best known for his gutsy style — not his punching power.

Smith’s experience as a former champ and competing against better opposition played a significant role in his upset. He is a versatile fighter with a big heart and is an absolute terror if opponents can’t keep him outside. Smith is a relentless stalker and shows the kind of patience and timing needed to deal with speedsters like Eubank.

Eubank falling apart against another rival has many wondering if the road is narrowing for the second-generation star. The 33-year-old had every advantage in the first fight, so the conclusive nature of that loss and the sudden failing of his chin was a shock. To even the score, Eubank dropped Roy Jones Jr. and hired trainer Brian "Bomac" McIntyre late into training camp, giving him less than a month to work with his new trainer.

Despite the conclusive ending of their first fight, Eubank isn't without routes to victory. He’s got faster hands than Smith and a natural size advantage, having spurts of success at both 160 and 168 pounds. He’ll have to be ready to pack a lunch and bring his best against Smith, as a loss here will be severely detrimental to his future in the sport.

There seems to be something that isn’t clicking with Eubank, and he’s inconsistent at the worst possible moments. That hasn’t worked against fighters with that consistency, like Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Callum Smith before him.  

There wasn’t anything special Smith did in that prior fight. He waited for Eubank to shoot in, blasted him with a big shot, and worked him over for a stoppage. At no point leading up to the knockout did Eubank look comfortable offensively. 

What we do know about Smith is he’s durable, hard to fight off, and knows how to finish an opponent when there is an opening. Even if Eubank wants to play it safe, he'll be fighting on his back foot and get outpointed. I’m confidently picking Smith to beat Eubank.

Best Bet: Smith by KO/TKO/DQ (+160)

Rematches tend to be fought at a more deliberate pace than the first fight, and Eubank might opt to box more and use his natural advantages to fend Smith away. With Smith’s constant pressure and the possibility of Eubank taking a more conservative approach, I expect a similar outcome from the previous fight. 

I don’t think Eubank had enough time to make the adjustments to win. He was banking on his athleticism and activity to overwhelm the smaller Smith, and I don't expect a cautious approach to do anything else besides delay the inevitable. 

I’m taking Smith by knockout to end Eubank’s relevancy once and for all.
