Liverpool vs Toulouse predictions

In Jurgen Klopp’s debut campaign at Anfield, Liverpool reached the final of the Europa League.

They were the favourites going into the game at St Jakob-Park in Basel in May 2016, but Sevilla’s love affair with the tournament claimed another victim as the Spanish side ran out 3-1 winners.

Liverpool have not had a chance to right that wrong since - and that is a good thing. In each of the last five seasons before this one, the Reds competed in the Champions League instead of the Europa League.

A fifth-place finish in the Premier League last season saw them drop into the continent’s secondary tournament, however. And although they have won two games out of two so far, we do not yet know how seriously Liverpool intend to take the Europa League.

In 2015/16, Klopp felt this was a trophy worth fighting for. It represented his only remaining chance of a first piece of silverware on Merseyside following defeat by Manchester City in the EFL Cup final in March.

Besides, Liverpool had little else to play for back then. They could only muster an eighth-place finish in the Premier League after winning less than half of their 38 matches.

Come the business end of the current campaign, Liverpool will hope to have more to play for than just the Europa League.

The biggest prize, of course, is the Premier League title. Liverpool are on course to challenge as things stand, with just three points separating them from Tottenham Hotspur in top spot.

Klopp named a rotated team for Liverpool’s two previous Europa League encounters, and he will probably do the same again here.

Even so, Toulouse will struggle to emerge from Anfield with a positive result this Thursday.

📝 Liverpool vs Toulouse betting tips

Toulouse are unbeaten in Group E and sit second in the standings, but Liverpool should prove too strong for their guests.

Liverpool -2 handicap - 13/10 (bet365)

Liverpool were made to work for three Premier League points at the weekend. Their opponents Everton were reduced to 10 men in the first half of the Merseyside derby, but Sean Dyche’s side made life difficult for Liverpool despite their numerical disadvantage.

In the end it took a penalty for the home team to make the breakthrough, before Mohamed Salah doubled their lead deep into second-half stoppage time.

It is not a performance that will live long in the memory but Liverpool still did enough to win and thus remain in touch with the three teams above them in the table.

It also continues Klopp’s team’s magnificent recent record in front of their own supporters. Liverpool have won each of their six home games in all competitions this term. Since the start of March they have won 12 and drawn two of their 14 matches at Anfield.

Toulouse could be in for a tough evening, then. Liverpool possess an abundance of attacking talent these days and Klopp will be looking to unleash that on Thursday.

A win by a three-goal margin is a distinct possibility. Toulouse may have four points in the Europa League, but they are in mid-table of Ligue 1. This should be a reasonably comfortable 90 minutes for the Reds.

Liverpool to score in both halves - 8/13 (bet365)

Given they are competing in four different competitions this term, it is essential that Liverpool have alternative attacking options.

Salah, still their star man, is now 31 years of age and less well equipped to play two games a week.

It is just as well, then, that Liverpool have five excellent attackers capable of rotating in and out of the team.

Cody Gakpo is currently out injured, but there is great excitement at Anfield about the 17-year-old winger Ben Doak, who started the 3-1 defeat of LASK on matchday one.

Whichever three forwards are selected on Thursday, Liverpool will pack a punch in attack.

Toulouse have only kept one clean sheet in six away games this season, so the Reds will fancy their chances of finding the back of the net either side of half-time, just as they did in a 2-0 win against Union Saint-Gilloise last time out in the Europa League.

Darwin Nunez to score any time - 4/5 (bet365)

Darwin Nunez has only started a third of Liverpool’s nine Premier League games this term. He is expected to equal that tally in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Uruguay international would prefer to feature from the first whistle domestically, and he should still get chances to do so as the season wears on.

For now, Nunez must ensure he makes the most of the opportunities he gets in the Europa League. He made the net bulge against LASK in the first round of fixtures and looks like an astute choice as an anytime goalscorer when Toulouse come to town this week.

Nunez might not be the most polished centre-forward, but when he is on his game it is very difficult for opposition defenders to deal with him.

Nunez will put himself about on Thursday and no one will be surprised if he adds to his tally for the season.
