Liverpool vs Wolves LIVE commentary: Reds face fourth showdown against Midlands side in 2023 with top four hopes slipping away

Liverpool and Wolves will meet for a fourth time already this year as the two faltering teams renew their rivalry live on talkSPORT 2.

The two under-performing sides are perfectly poised at one win, one draw and one defeat from their three meetings across two FA Cup matches and the reverse Premier League game this month.

Liverpool stumbled to a point in a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace that came just days after they were humbled 5-2 at home to Real Madrid.

The Reds are now a whopping nine points adrift of the top four and were torn to shreds by Wolves 3-0 when they met at Molineux.

Julen Lopetegui’s men were forced to settle for their own draw away at Fulham last time out and are just three points outside the relegation zone.

Liverpool vs Wolves: Team news

The hosts have a number of other injury concerns, with Thiago, Calvin Ramsay, Luis Diaz and Joe Gomez all sidelined, but Ibrahima Konate has returned to training.

Wolves are sweating on the fitness of Matheus Cunha after he was withdrawn with an ankle problem in the 1-1 draw with Fulham.

Hwang Hee-chan, Sasa Kalajdzic and Chiquinho all remain in the treatment room although Boubacar Traore is near a return.

Liverpool vs Wolves: What has been said?

Scott Minto told talkSPORT: “First of all, Jurgen Klopp needs to look in the mirror and see if he can go again. I genuinely believe he can and he’s earnt the right to do that with what he’s done. It’s one bad season.

“He needs to rebuild in the way Sir Alex Ferguson has done [at Manchester United]. He needs to go to the board and say, ‘how much money have I got?’

“It’s all very well saying Liverpool need two midfielders – how much is Jude Bellingham going to cost? How much is a Declan Rice, or someone like that, going to cost?

“If you’re going to bring in another central defender or someone else, how much money do they have to play with? Because as much as we say this, we’re playing Football Manager here. How much money has he got? Does he have to sell players before he can buy?

“For Liverpool to be up there, I’d love to see a Jude Bellingham go there. I think the fit would be perfect. He’s exactly the type of player he needs.

“But where else does he need to do it? The defenders need to step up their performances. Even Virgil van Dijk, not long ago one of the best central defenders in world football, he’s a million miles from where he was.

“Trent, I’m sorry, it’s not lazy punditry to say that defensively he’s not very good. I’d be fascinated to know if he came off tonight with a niggle or not, or whether it was a tactical thing to put James Milner at right back when you’re chasing a game.”

Liverpool vs Wolves: Match facts

  • Since his Premier League debut on 22nd January, Pablo Sarabia has created more chances (7), had more shots on target (3) and played more passes into the box (29) than any other Wolves player. He netted his first goal for the club in their 1-1 draw at Fulham last time out.
  • Mohamed Salah – who has scored in his last two home league games against Wolves – has scored 126 Premier League goals for Liverpool, and is just two goals away from equalling Robbie Fowler (128) in becoming the Reds’ highest scorer in the competition.
  • Craig Dawson (on his club debut) and Rúben Neves scored for Wolves in their victory over Liverpool in the reverse fixture. The last Wolves player to score home and away league goals against the Reds in the same season was John Richards in 1972-73.
  • Liverpool are the only side yet to concede a goal from outside the box in the Premier League this season; last season, the Reds conceded a league-high share 27% of their goals from distance (7/26).
  • In their first 15 Premier League games this season, Wolves were averaging 0.5 goals per game, 1.6 goals conceded per game and 0.7 points per game. In their nine games under Julen Lopetegui, they are averaging 1.1 goals, 1 goal conceded and 1.6 points.
  • Liverpool have kept three consecutive Premier League clean sheets for the first time this season, last keeping more consecutively between February and April 2022 (5). The Reds have faced just five shots on target in these three matches, four of which were against Newcastle.
  • Liverpool have failed to score in four of their last six league games, having failed to find the net in just three of their previous 65. Indeed, they’ve failed to score in four league games so far in 2023, twice as many as in the whole of 2022.
  • Wolves scored as many goals in their 3-0 win over Liverpool last month as they had in their previous 11 league games against them combined. However, they’ve not scored more than once in any of their last 17 league visits to Anfield (5 goals in total) since a 2-4 loss in September 1972.
  • Wolves’ 3-0 win in the reverse fixture ended an 11-game losing run against Liverpool in the Premier League. They’re looking to complete the league double over the Reds for the first time since 1950-51.
  • Liverpool have won 18 of their last 20 home league games against Wolves, with the exceptions being 1-0 defeats in January 1984 and December 2010.
