Man arrested after trespassing twice in one day at Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s home in Los Angeles

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — As evidence mounts in an alleged sign-stealing scheme involving Michigan football and a low-level staffer who reportedly is at the center of an NCAA investigation, how this could ultimately affect the program and head coach Jim Harbaugh is unclear.

Bobby “Bingo ” Smith, a small forward who helped the Cleveland Cavaliers climb from expansion team to playoff contender in the 1970s, has died. He was 77. The Cavs announced Smith’s passing on Thursday night. There was no immediate known cause of death. Smith had battled health issues in recent years. He's one of seven former players to have his number retired by Cleveland. Smith  he was selected by Cleveland in the 1970 expansion draft. He led the Cavs in scoring in the 1974-75 season, and the following year Smith helped Cleveland make the playoffs for the first time. The Cavs rallied to upset the heavily favored Washington Bullets in a seven-game series now known as the “Miracle of Richfield.”

The Philadelphia 76ers went to Milwaukee without James Harden and the NBA wants to know why. They league, which strengthened its rules about resting healthy players this summer, is investigating the reasons behind Harden’s absence from the 76ers’ nationally televised season opener against the Bucks. Harden wants to be traded and was away from the Sixers recently until returning this week. Coach Nick Nurse said Wednesday that the point guard wouldn’t travel with the team so he could work on rebuilding his conditioning with team staff members at the 76ers’ training facility. The player participation policy requires teams to demonstrate an approved reason for a star player to miss national TV games.

Saquon Barkley has played once against the New York Jets in a regular-season game and the Giants running back recalled the experience was fun. He said there was a lot of juice to the game in 2019 and fan excitement in the contest the Jets won 34-27. The Giants (2-5) and Jets (3-3) will renew that experience Sunday when they meet at MetLife Stadium in what will be a home game for Barkley and company. The one thing Barkley recalls from the 2019 game was his rushing total. He gained 1 yard on 13 carries, his worst game as a pro.

Tyson Bagent generated plenty of headlines in leading the Chicago Bears to a victory in his first NFL start. The undrafted rookie gets a chance on a prime-time stage to show he is more than a one-game wonder. Bagent and the Bears travel to Southern California to face the reeling Los Angeles Chargers Sunday night. Chicago has won two of three since a 14-game losing streak while Los Angeles has dropped two straight. Bagent gets the start again with Justin Fields sidelined due to a dislocated thumb. He will face a Chargers defense ranked last against the pass at 310 yards per game.

Supporters of a ballot measure that would enshrine abortion rights in the Ohio Constitution are far outraising their anti-abortion opponents in the months leading up to the November election. Campaign filings show the pro-Issue 1 campaign brought in nearly $29 million from donors since Sept. 8. The campaign against the amendment raised just under $10 million in the same time period. Much of the money in support of abortion rights has come from out-of-state donors and groups. Data from the campaign ad spending tracker AdImpact shows abortion rights groups are on track to outspend anti-abortion groups by about $7 million through Election Day.

Frank Clark didn’t question whether he’d be ready to play this Sunday just days after making his return to the Seattle Seahawks. He wants to wear the throwback uniforms the Seahawks will debut this week against Cleveland. Clark can also be of help to a group of defensive ends that took a hit this week when Uchenna Nwosu was lost to a pectoral injury. Nwosu's injury cleared the way for Clark to return to the team where he got his start in the NFL. Clark was a second-round pick by Seattle in 2015 and spent four seasons with the Seahawks before being traded to Kansas City in 2019.

An Idaho woman is suing her one-time fertility doctor, saying he secretly used his own sperm to inseminate her 34 years ago. It's the latest in a string of such cases brought as at-home DNA sampling enables people to learn more about their ancestry. Sixty-seven-year-old Sharon Hayes of Hauser, Idaho, said in the lawsuit that she sought fertility care from Dr. David R. Claypool, an obstetrician and gynecologist in Spokane, Washington, in 1989 after she and her then-husband had been unable to conceive. Her 33-year-old daughter, Brianna Hayes, said she learned who her biological father was last year after submitting her DNA to the genetic testing and ancestry website 23andMe. Claypool's attorney declined to comment.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has defended teammate Alejandro Garnacho after the winger used gorilla emojis in a social media post about him. The 19-year-old Argentina international posted a photo of players congratulating Onana for stopping a penalty in United’s 1-0 win over Copenhagen in the Champions League. Garnacho used two gorilla emojis above the photo in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. It was then deleted. MOSCOW, Idaho — The judge overseeing the case of Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of murdering four University of Idaho students last year, on Thursday denied the defense’s push to dismiss the grand jury indictment based on a purported error in instruction to the jurors.

The Denver Broncos are out to snap a pair of ignominious streaks Sunday when they host the Chiefs just 17 days after losing for the 16th consecutive time to Kansas City. The Broncos are seeking their first victory over the Chiefs since Week 2 of the 2015 season. Alvin Kamara and Jonathan Taylor have been two of the most successful and versatile running backs in the NFL. On Sunday, they will be on opposite sidelines for the first time when the New Orleans Saints visit Indianapolis. Both missed the first part of the season, but seem to be rounding into midseason form. Officials say a Houston-area deputy accused of fatally shooting a man while confronting him after a shoplifting incident has been indicted by a grand jury for murder. Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Garrett Hardin has been charged in the July 2022 death of Roderick Brooks. Hardin was indicted on Thursday. Hardin’s attorney previously has said his actions were legal and he would be exonerated. Body camera footage released by the sheriff's office shows Hardin and Garrett struggling over the deputy's stun gun during a confrontation before Hardin fatally shot him. If convicted of murder, Hardin could be sentenced to up to life in prison.

CHICAGO — The man accused of fatally stabbing a 6-year-old Palestinian American boy and severely injuring his mother days after the Hamas attack was indicted by a Will County grand jury on hate crime, murder and other charges, prosecutors said Thursday.
