Manchester City vs Sevilla predictions

How do you improve on a treble-winning season? By lifting even more trophies, of course.

It will be difficult for Manchester City to repeat the feat of triumphing in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, never mind better it.

Last season was the most successful in the club’s history, as City swept all before them at home and abroad. They were victorious in the three most important tournaments they entered, matching Manchester United’s achievement from the 1998/99 campaign.

Numerically at least, City have the chance to pick up even more silverware this time around. They fell short in the EFL Cup in 2022/23, suffering a shock defeat by Nathan Jones’ Southampton in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile their participation in the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup means City have even more shots at glory this season.

Of course, the Premier League and the Champions League remain the priorities. Pep Guardiola, you feel, would sacrifice every other competition if he was guaranteed victory in those two.

Yet the UEFA Super Cup is a prize that City as a club have never before claimed, so there is a strong incentive to take Wednesday’s match seriously.

Guardiola’s team missed out on the Community Shield, the domestic equivalent of this fixture, which gives them another reason to go all-out for victory this week.

Needless to say, this game is far from the most important that City will contest this season. But with a trophy on the line, we should expect them to take it seriously.

And if they do, that is bad news for Sevilla.

Manchester City vs Sevilla betting tips

Manchester City should have too much quality for Sevilla in this one - find out three specific betting tips below.

Manchester City to win both halves - 2/1 (bet365)

Manchester City got the new campaign off to the perfect start on Friday.

Shaking off that defeat by Arsenal in the Community Shield, Guardiola’s team eased to a 3-0 victory over Burnley in their maiden Premier League outing.

City were not at their best at Turf Moor, but that did not matter. It was an early statement of intent as they seek to become the first English side in history to win four titles on the bounce.

Guardiola may well have an eye on this weekend’s meeting with Newcastle United as he prepares his players for the UEFA Super Cup.

That match against the Magpies will take precedence and we could see a couple of changes to the starting XI as a result.

Yet although their squad is not as deep as that of other top teams, City have more than enough quality in reserve.

For instance, Jack Grealish, Josko Gvardiol, Aymeric Laporte and Mateo Kovacic all began on the bench against Burnley.

What’s more, playing twice in the same week should not be a problem at this early stage of the season.

Kevin De Bruyne limped out of the Burnley game with a hamstring problem that will keep him sidelined for at least a few weeks.

That is undoubtedly a blow, but it does not change the fact that City should prove too strong for Sevilla if they play anywhere near their full potential.

Both teams to score - 10/11 (bet365)

Sevilla wrote a new chapter in their ongoing love affair with the Europa League last season.

Despite being embroiled in a relegation battle in La Liga for much of the campaign, they still managed to win their favourite tournament for a record-extending seventh time.

Appointed in March with the remit of keeping Sevilla in the top flight of Spanish football, Jose Luis Mendilibar did just that and also led the club to yet another continental gong.

This will be the Nervionenses’ seventh appearance in the UEFA Super Cup - and their record up to now is not good.

Sevilla triumphed in 2006, brushing Barcelona aside in a 3-0 win in Monaco. But since then they have lost five games on the bounce.

Yet Sevilla have scored in four of those defeats, including four times in a thrilling 5-4 defeat by Barcelona of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar in 2015.

Manchester City will be without Ruben Dias and John Stones - arguably their two best defenders - while probable starter Gvardiol is not quite up to speed with his new team-mates.

That, together with the possibility that City could take their foot off the gas at some point, means it is worth backing goals at both ends.

Erling Haaland to score first - 12/5 (bet365)

Erling Haaland is inevitable. After a quiet performance in the Community Shield, the Norway international smashed two goals past Burnley on Friday to get up and running for the new season.

Haaland tends to play whenever he is fit, so we should see him included in the starting line-up in Greece.

Sevilla conceded two goals to Valencia in their opening La Liga game, as Mendilibar’s men suffered defeat on Friday.

Keeping Haaland quiet is a task that even the world’s best centre-backs struggle with. Do not be surprised if City’s star striker draws first blood in the UEFA Super Cup, just as he did against Burnley a few days ago.
