Liverpool too good for Red Devils

The standout tie of the FA Cup quarter-finals takes us to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon as two of the four most successful sides in the competition’s history face off, with Manchester United hoping to salvage their dismal season and end Liverpool’s hopes of an unprecedented quadruple.

Jurgen Klopp’s side destroyed Sparta Prague in the Europa League in midweek and, while United should put up more of a challenge, the Reds have shown their ruthless streak of late and they can make their arch-rivals pay on Sunday.

The Reds have scored 28 goals across their last nine matches in all competitions and have won eight of those, with six of those victories being by more than a single goal.

Away from home they have won by two goals or more in five of their last nine assignments and the favourites have an excellent recent record in this fixture.

They have beaten United in four of their last six meetings, scoring 21 goals and conceding just four in that run, and four victories have been by more than a single goal.

Erik ten Hag’s side have lost by two or more goals on eight occasions this season and the rampant Reds could make it nine at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Salah the man to stop

Mohamed Salah started in midweek for the first time since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations and looked back to his best, scoring once and providing three assists against Sparta.

The Egyptian now has 20 goals and 12 assists across 31 competitive appearances for Liverpool this season, averaging a goal contribution every 69 minutes.

In the past five games in which he has been on the pitch for 45 minutes or more, Salah has scored five and had five assists and he can draw yet more confidence from his stunning record against his team’s north-west rivals.

The 31-year-old has netted 12 goals and supplied four assists in 13 meetings with United – and 11 of those goals have come in his previous seven appearances against the Red Devils.

Key men to call the shots

Liverpool duo Salah and Darwin Nunez are among the top 10 in the Premier League for shots on target per 90 minutes this season and they will be a huge threat against a United side who have allowed their opponents 138 shots on target this season.

Nunez leads the way in the top flight with 2.12 shots on target per 90 and the Uruguayan has hit the target at least once in 11 of his last 12 appearances. Team-mate Salah has tested the opposition goalkeeper in each of his last 13 club outings, totalling 21 attempts on target in that period.

While Liverpool are expected to be the more threatening side, Bruno Fernandes has had 24 shots on target in the Premier League this season and can provide some interest at the other end of the pitch.

The Portuguese maestro has a goal contribution in each of his last three games and tested Everton keeper Jordan Pickford twice last weekend, meaning he has now had one or more shots on target in seven of his last nine outings.
