Mano Dura seeks second-straight win of the season in Canadian Derby

Manitoba Derby winner Mano Dura will look to continue his winning ways, going 1 1/4 miles in the second leg of the Western Canadian Triple Crown this Saturday in the Grade 3, $200,000 Canadian Derby at Edmonton’s Century Mile Racetrack and Casino.

The series concludes with the Grade 3 British Columbia Derby on Sept. 16 at Hastings, with a $100,000 bonus up for grabs to any horse that sweeps all three prestigious races for 3-year-olds.

Other horses entered in the 12-horse field include the unbeaten British Columbia invader Sunbird. In addition, American invaders will join the dance, including the son of the late Arrogate Abeliefinthislivin and Chase the Chaos, who finished a distant fifth in the Grade 1 Preakness at Pimlico. Robertino Diodoro, who is no stranger to winning the Canadian Derby, will have Heroic Move entered, who had a very rough trip in the Manitoba Derby but still ended up second. He will be using the services of former outstanding Alberta jockey Rico Walcott, who moved his tack this year to Woodbine Park in Toronto.

Post time for the first race is 3:45 p.m. Mountain, with the 94th Canadian Derby going at 9:15 p.m.

The $100,000 Century Casino Oaks for 3-year-old fillies headed by Air Force who is unbeaten in four starts this year, all at Hastings Park in B.C. … B.C.-based Infinite Patience, owned in part by Oilers superstar Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, ships over the mountains and will get all the attention in the $100,000 Northlands Distaff Handicap for the third year in a row. She is unbeaten in four starts at Century Mile … The $100,000 Speed to Spare Championship ends the 12-race card … Coming off a victory in the Century Mile Handicap, the very nicely bred Smart as Me was a $6,000 bargain buy at the 2021 Kentucky sale and will look for a second stakes victory in a row for the very hot trainer Craig Smith.
