Maryland football: Preview, how to watch Friday night battle vs. former ACC rival Virginia

Maryland football looks to finish off its nonconference slate at a perfect 3-0 Friday night, and the opportunity will come against a familiar foe.

These Terps have never faced off against Virginia, but it will be the 79th all-time meeting between Maryland and its former ACC rival. Friday will mark the first time they face off since Oct. 12, 2013, when Caleb Rowe led Maryland to a 27-26 home win.

Maryland will play its second straight night game at home, though it is coming off a short week. Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch and listen to the matchup.

Kickoff: 7:05 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15 at SECU Stadium in College Park, Maryland

TV: FOX Sports 1 – Eric Collins (play-by-play), Devin Gardner (analyst)

Live Stream: FuboTV

Radio: Maryland Sports Radio Network/105.7FM (Baltimore)/980AM (Washington, D.C.)/Sirius XM 136 – Johnny Holliday (play-by-play), Steve Suter (analyst), LaMont Jordan (sideline)

Betting Line: Maryland -14.5, O/U 47

Mike Locksley was not thrilled that the Terps had to turn around immediately to a Friday night game. Maryland began its game prep Sunday and will ultimately have had 13 straight days without an off day before Saturday. Regardless, Locksley is excited to bring back the Maryland-Virginia rivalry, and it reflects the way he would like to schedule each season.

“The first one is the rivalry and what it means and the health of it. Well, much like playing West Virginia, who's a longtime rival of the University of Maryland, UVA is one of those games as well, and I know our fans get excited, especially when they’re our old ACC foes, to have the opportunity to compete against them,” Locksley said Tuesday. “And I know we do it in some of our other sports here. So to be able to have this game on our schedule is something that I wanted that, obviously because of the proximity and because of some of the history behind this game.”

Virginia head coach Tony Elliott echoed Locksley’s sentiment, saying Tuesday he is all about the “pageantry” that makes games like Maryland vs. Virginia special.

The Cavaliers are 0-2 through two games. The then-No. 12 Tennessee Volunteers demolished Virginia 49-13 in week one. Then Virginia fell 36-35 in a heartbreaker to James Madison at home last Saturday. True freshman quarterback Anthony Colandrea filled in admirably for starter Tony Muskett in week two, but Muskett (day-to-day, full practice participant) will start Friday if he is ready to go.

Maryland has dominated its nonconference slate in the Locksley era, holding a 12-1 record in such games. The Terps had no problem with Towson in a 38-6 week one win, and they scored 38 unanswered points in an eventual 38-20 win against Charlotte last Saturday. Taulia Tagovailoa has completed 68.1% of his passes for 547 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions thus far, though he did not look his sharpest against the 49ers. Roman Hemby, who has been labeled as underrated around the conference, has 31 carries for 220 yards – 7.1 yards per carry – and two touchdowns in two games.

Maryland is reasonably a big favorite against the Cavaliers, and it has another opportunity to take advantage of a national spotlight at home.
