Matt Chapman next team odds: Wide-open market includes Blue Jays at +500

Spring training is underway across baseball, but Matt Chapman is one of a few notable players still seeking employment.

The latest: Chapman, who held down the hot corner for the Toronto Blue Jays last season, remains unsigned with about five weeks remaining before Opening Day. Toronto (+500) is one of the teams in the running to sign him, though the field (+100) has the shortest odds.

Here are our latest Chapman next team odds as of February 20.

Betting favourites to sign Chapman

Technically, the favourite to sign Chapman is the field — excluding the Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays. But among specific teams, the Mariners (+150) are the clear frontrunners.

According to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, the Mariners "have discussed the possibility of adding Chapman."

Seattle shipped its everyday third baseman, Eugenio Suarez, to Arizona this offseason despite having no obvious replacement at that position.

If the season started today, Josh Rojas and Luis Urias would likely split third base duties in a platoon. Both players are below 100 OPS+ in their respective careers, though, and neither one has spent even half of his respective games at third base.

Perhaps the Mariners can settle for a Rojas/Urias split at third. But Chapman would be an obvious upgrade at the plate and in the field.

The four-time Gold Glove winner had a down year offensively in 2023, but he still finished with a 108 OPS+ while posting a 93.4 mph average exit velocity (98th percentile, per Baseball Savant).

Blue Jays' odds to sign Chapman

Chapman put together a 1.152 OPS in his first month of the 2023 season, but his lasting impression on Toronto wasn't nearly as jolly.

From May onward, Chapman had a .659 OPS while striking out in 30.0% of his plate appearances. He did collect another Gold Glove, but the offensive output was disappointing to say the least.

Toronto general manager Ross Atkins recently told reporters, "We feel good about the team that we have." That quote, coupled with the Jays' recent non-roster invitation to Eduardo Escobar, suggests that Chapman is hardly on their radar.

Nonetheless, Toronto has +500 odds to bring Chapman back.
