Mets have their eye on ex-Yankees reliever after Edwin Diaz injury

The New York Mets could be without their star closer this season and will need to turn their attention to potentially adding depth to lessen the blow of losing him.

Wednesday night, Edwin Diaz suffered a knee injury during the celebration of Puerto Rico’s 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic. The Mets issued a statement later that night saying that Diaz will undergo imaging Thursday.

So now what?

John Harper of SNY reports: Mets will be in attendance for Zack Britton’s simulated game in California today. If he looks healthy they almost have to sign him, unless Edwin Diaz’s knee injury somehow isn’t as bad as it appeared. Britton could be a big help as late-inning guy. Showalter loves him.

Britton played under Buck Showalter with the Baltimore Orioles from 2011-2018. The Mets watched him work out last month.

The Orioles traded Britton to the New York Yankees in 2018. He missed most of last season with the Yankees while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

There’s no doubting the 35-year-old southpaw is past his prime. But in his day, Britton was one of the best relievers in the game. He led the majors with 47 saves in 2016 and finished fourth in voting that year for the American League Cy Young Award. And he owns a career ERA of 3.13 over 12 MLB seasons.
