Middlesbrough managerial search update emerges following link to Coventry City's Mark Robins

Coventry City fans can rest easy, safe in the knowledge that managerless Middlesbrough are not currently understood to be pursuing Mark Robins as a target to fill the hot seat at the Riverside Stadium.

Boro sacked Chris Wilder on Monday morning, just two days after they lost 1-0 to bottom of the league Sky Blues at the CBS Arena, and have been linked with a number of candidates since.

Former Watford manager Rob Edwards is the bookmakers’ favourite to succeed Wilder, whose side slipped into the bottom three after the opening ten games of the season.

North East transfer specialist Graeme Bailey, who writes for 90mins.com, claimed City boss Robins is on owner and chairman Steve Gibson’s radar to replace Wilder, tweeting: “Rob Edwards and Carlos Corberan have already been spoken to by Boro. Mark Robins is someone they like a lot, but his compensation could be an issue.”

CoventryLive, however, understands that Boro’s hierarchy have not made contact with City, strongly suggesting they are looking elsewhere for a replacement.

Edwards had a short-lived tenure at Watford - losing his job after just 10 games at the helm. The 39-year-old is tipped as one of England’s brightest young coaches and would be considered a long-term option at the Riverside Stadium. BetVictor price Edwards as the odds-on favourite to replace Wilder at 4/5.

Other runners include Carlos Corberan (4/1), who has been out of work since resigning as Huddersfield Town manager just weeks before the season. The Spaniard transformed the Terriers’ fortunes and took them to the brink of Premier League football - losing the play-off final to Nottingham Forest.

Other candidates - whose remit will be to save Boro’s season - include Sam Allardyce (14/1) and Sean Dyche (16/1). Anyone fancying a long shot may fancy a flutter on Joey Barton, Wayne Rooney or Marcelo Bielsa at 25/1.
