The Colorado Rockies look to stay perfect as they continue their season-opening series against the San Diego Padres. We are at Petco Park sharing our MLB odds series, making a Rockies-Padres prediction and pick while showing you how to watch.

The Rockies defeated the Padres 4-1 to improve to 2-0. Ultimately, the Rockies struck early when Elhuris Montero clubbed an RBI single to give the Rockies the 2-0 lead. The Rockies held the Padres scoreless early. Thus, it mattered more when Charlie Blackmon clobbered a 2-run bomb to right field to give the Rockies a 4-0 lead. The Rockies continued to shut down the Padres. Then, San Diego got on the board with a sacrifice fly from Xander Bogaerts.

Kyle Freeland tossed six scoreless innings while allowing three hits, striking out one, and walking one. Furthermore, the bullpen went three innings while allowing one earned run on one hit. Brad Hand had the only blemish in the eighth inning. Finally, Pierce Johnson pitched the ninth, and notched the save against his former team. Nick Martinez tossed seven innings for the Padres while allowing four earned runs, six hits, and striking out five while walking two.

Jose Urena will get the start for the Rockies on the hill. Ultimately, he is hoping to improve after enduring a season where he went 3-8 with a 5.01 ERA and 63 starts. Urena also went 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in two starts against the Padres. Meanwhile, Michael Wacha makes his Padres debut and is looking to build himself further after going 11-2 with a 3.32 ERA through 23 starts with the Boston Red Sox. Wacha is 1-2 with a 5.18 ERA in seven career starts against the Rockies.

Why The Rockies Could Cover The Spread

The Rockies were supposed to be one of the worst teams in the National League. Yet, they have somehow gotten off to a good start by taking the first two games. They look to keep the momentum going.

Yonathan Diaz went 0 for 2 leading off for the Rockies. Meanwhile, Kris Bryant went 1 for 4. Blackson went 2 for 4, while CJ Cron went 1 for 2. Furthermore, Ryan McMahon went 0 for 4. The Rockies won despite scoring all their runs in bursts. Significantly, all four of their runs came over two innings. But the Rockies may need to do more to beat the Padres for a third time. Ultimately, they must gain some consistency with their offense. The pitching held its own yesterday. However, can Urena keep it going for the Rockies? It will be interesting to see how the Rockies do in the third game of their season.

The Rockies will cover the spread if they can jump out to an early lead again. Then, their solid pitching must continue. The defense must remain adequate.

Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread

The Padres are supposed to be National League contenders. However, they are once again stumbling out of the gate. Remember that Fernando Tatis is still facing a suspension for the first few weeks due to alleged PED violations. Ultimately, the Padres do not have their complete lineup yet.

Bogaerts went 1 for 4 last night but was the only source of offense. Somehow, this lineup managed just five hits. Juan Soto went 0 for 3, while Manny Machado went 1 for 4. Additionally, Nelson Cruz and Jake Cronenworth both went 0 for 4. Ha-Seong Kim went 3 for 3, but no one could drive him home as he provided 60 percent of the offense. Thus, it was not a successful night for the Padres. But is this a trend or just a blimp in the radar? The Padres must figure things out fast before falling into too deep a hole. Moreover, they must score more than the three combined runs they have produced over the first two games.

The Padres will cover the spread if they can avoid the early deficit. Therefore, Wacha must shine with his new team and avoid falling into early trouble. The offense has to deliver with runners in scoring position. Finally, the hitters must be more patient at the plate.

Final Rockies-Padres Prediction & Pick

The Padres have not been able to hit the baseball. Likewise, the Rockies are doing just enough to win. Expect another low-scoring affair, but more in the 4-3 or 5-3 game than 4-1. Thus, the Rockies and Padres will continue to hit the baseball.

Final Rockies-Padres Prediction & Pick: Under: 8.5 (-115)
