MLB places Wander Franco on administrative leave; Rays support decision

Wander Franco was placed on administrative leave on Tuesday as MLB continues its investigation into the 22-year-old.

The Tampa Bay Rays’ All-Star shortstop is being investigated after allegations surfaced of him having relationships with underage girls. A social media post went viral earlier this month that included pictures of Franco and the alleged minor.

Franco is also being investigated by the Dominican Republic, which is being led by the gender violence and minor division.

The Rays placed Franco on the restricted list on Aug. 14 before the league placed him on administrative leave. There is an option for Franco to challenge the leave, but a statement from the Rays suggests he and the team have accepted the decision.

“We support Major League Baseball’s decision to place Wander Franco on Administration Leave. The Tampa Bay Rays are dedicated to upholding high standards of integrity both on and off the field,” the statement read. “We appreciate the understanding and patience of our fans and supporters as this process unfolds. We will have no further statements on this matter until MLB completes its process.”

It’s unclear what Franco’s future looks like in MLB, but one report suggested it is “very unlikely” he’ll ever play again.
