MLB's top 20 prospects for 2023: Gunnar Henderson, Corbin Carroll top list; Yankees' Anthony Volpe climbs

The Major League Baseball offseason is here. CBS Sports has created two league-wide lists of prospects. The first one runs 20 deep, the second one will be closer to spring. The rankings are based on conversations with scouts, analysts and player development types. They are not set in stone.

Gunnar Henderson was drafted by the Orioles in 2019. He played in 34 games last season, including 34 in the majors. Henderson played mainly at third base, but he also played at second and short. His offensive skills are good, with above-average raw power and disciplined eye.

Gunnar Henderson and Corbin Carroll are MLB's top 20 prospects for 2023. Anthony Volpe climbs to No. 2. Carrol played in only 142 minor-league games last season due to injuries and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Francisco Álvarez reached the majors late last season. He didn't fare well in five regular season games, but he has big-time raw power and he's improved his defense enough to bet on him sticking at catcher.

Gunnar Henderson, Corbin Carroll and Anthony Volpe are MLB's top prospects for 2023. Gabriel Moreno is the fourth best prospect.

Jackson Chourio was the breakout star of the minor-league season in 2022. He hit .288/.342/.538 with 20 home runs and 16 stolen bases split across three levels. Chourio is a fantastic athlete with a dynamic (and well-above-average) power-speed combination.

James Wood is an outfielder who was drafted in 2021. He has improved his strikeout rate and is athletic. One talent evaluator suggested he should be ranked No. 1 overall. He's 20 years old. Gunnar Henderson, Corbin Carroll and Anthony Volpe are MLB's top 20 prospects for 2023.

Jordan Walker is a 21-year-old third baseman/outfielder who has immense strength and raw power. He needs to improve his launch angle to be a better hitter. The Cardinals have already started cross-training him in the outfield.

Grayson Rodriguez is a 23-year-old right-handed pitcher. He was injured in June and missed the whole of last season. Rodriguez has a good arsenal with three pitches: an upper-90s fastball, a slider and a changeup.

Eury Pérez is a 20-year-old right-hander with front-of-the-rotation potential. He has a mid-90s fastball and a pair of breaking balls. Perez averaged a walk every three innings across 18 starts at Double-A.

Marcelo Mayer was drafted by the Red Sox at No. 4 in the 2021 draft. He hit .280/.399/.489 with 13 home runs and 17 steals in 2022. Mayer is a promising defender with fluid actions and a good arm.

Jackson Holliday was drafted by the Cardinals as the No. 1 pick in last July's draft. Hollidays hit .297/.489/.422 with more than twice as many walks as strikeouts in 20 games last season. He won't be able to legally drink until December 2024.

Elly De La Cruz is a switch-hitting shortstop with well-above-average power and speed. He split last season between High- and Double-A, hitting .304/.359/.586 with 28 home runs and 47 steals. De la Cruz has a chance at becoming a star, but he also has some downside.

Anthony Volpe is ranked 13th in MLB's top 20 prospects for 2023. He will make his debut next summer. Vol pe is an above-average hitter who can contribute in each of the slash line categories.

Noelvi Marte was the top player Seattle sent to Cincinnati in the Luis Castillo trade. He's a good hitter with above-average raw power and a solid feel for contact. Marti played third base exclusively during the Arizona Fall League.

Andrew Painter was drafted by the Phillies in 2021. He's been playing in Double-A and should make his big-league debut in 2023. He has a fastball that can clear the 100-mph mark, two breaking balls and a changeup.

Gunnar Henderson, Corbin Carroll and Anthony Volpe are MLB's top 20 prospects for 2023. Marco Luciano is ranked 16th. Luciano had an above-average season in High-A, batting .263/.339/.459 with 10 home runs and 10 doubles in 57 games. He's a good hitter, but his footwork is not very good.

Druw Jones was the No. 1 pick in the draft last summer. He suffered a shoulder injury during a batting practice and missed his first taste of pro ball. Jones projects to have five above-average or better tools.

Kyle Harrison was drafted by the Giants with the 85th pick in the 2021 draft. He has a high-quality three-pitch mix, led by a lively mid-90s fastball and a swing-and-miss slider. Harrison needs to improve his command and average more than 4.5 innings per appearance to move up the list.

Jordan Lawlar was drafted by the Diamondbacks in 2021. He played in 100 games in four levels last season, including 20 at Double-A. Lawler tore his labrum and fractured his scapula in the Arizona Fall League.

Brooks Lee was the No. 1 pick in 2013, but he slipped to eighth. He played exclusively at shortstop for the Twins, and he hit .289/.395/.454 in 25 High-A games. Lee has had knee and back injuries in the past.
