Nations League Soccer Betting Picks: USA vs Trinidad and Tobago

The CONCACAF Nations League has a new purpose. All four teams that reach the semifinals will qualify for the next edition of the Copa America. And guess what? The next Copa America will take place in the United States in 2024.

Team USA is heavily favored in our sportsbook to defeat Trinidad and Tobago in the first leg of the quarterfinals despite a couple of big stars unavailable due to injury.

USA Defending Title

USA won the first two editions of the Nations League, defeating Mexico in the Grand Finale of the 2019-20 edition and Canada in the championship game of the 2022-23 edition.

The USA only lost one of its last 15 games in all competitions but failed to win the last official tournament they played, the Gold Cup, losing to Panama in the semifinals. The match finished 1-1, but they lost the penalty shootout.

A couple of stars won’t be available due to injury. But even with Christian Pulisic and Timothy Weah out, the USA is heavily favored in our Nations League lines. After all, 21 of the 24 players that were called up play in Europe.

Despite losing just three out of their last 10 games, nobody is expecting Trinidad and Tobago to pull off the stunner, meaning they will play with no pressure at all.

Regardless of the result, Nations League betting fans saw Trinidad score in nine of those matches.

Individually, Levi Garcia and Kevin Molino are the main reasons to consider betting on the visitors. Garcia plays for AEK Athens and has scored eight goals for the national team. As for Molino, who plays for Columbus Crew in the MLS, he has scored 23. Here’s a small sample of what he can do.

I expect Trinidad to rely on the counterattack, considering a draw would be a great result. Don’t forget that this is a two-game series, and the second leg will be in Trinidad.

Walk in the Park for USA

USA faced Trinidad and Tobago for the last time in the 2023 Gold Cup as online betting favorites. They won 6-0 with Jesus Ferreira as Player of the Match after scoring a hat-trick.

The total for this match is set at four goals, but I’m not sure about recommending the over. The USA won’t have a full roster, and this is only the first leg so neither team will be desperate for goals.

Head coach Gregg Berhalter will take advantage of facing a much weaker opponent to test certain players and see if they deserve a chance further down the line. That’s why I don’t expect another 6-0 or anything like it.
