Navy vs. Memphis Predictions, Picks & Odds Week 3: Tigers to Stifle Midshipmen Triple Option

Here is our best Navy vs. Memphis prediction based on the best college football odds for Thursday night’s American Athletic Conference opener.

The Memphis Tigers have outscored their opponents 93-17 through the first two games of the season. Granted, they have yet to face any true competition, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this offense and defense both look poised to put up big numbers throughout the year.

The Navy Midshipmen began the season with a 42-3 loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, then followed it up with a 24-0 win over the Wagner Seahawks. The Midshipmen put up 408 yards in their victory, but the offense looked far from impressive considering who they were playing. Will they be able to get their offense going in Week 3?

Here are our best Navy vs. Memphis predictions and college football picks (odds via our best college football betting sites; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

The Tigers are averaging 470 yards per game while allowing just 160.5. They have scored 37 or more in each of their first two games while allowing just 17 total points. And yet, this is only a three-star play because the Tigers have played no one.

Honestly, it's a bit concerning that the Tigers allowed 14 points to the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. However, the performance they put together the following week against the Arkansas Red Wolves leaves us feeling a bit more optimistic about their defense. They gave up just 230 yards while turning the Red Wolves over four times.

And this week, the offense they’re going up against isn’t very good. The Midshipmen still love to run the triple option, and while they will have a couple of long drives, they just don’t have the talent they normally do to really pose a threat to the defensive front.

The Tigers have gotten the better of the Midshipmen each of the last two seasons. The defense has successfully stifled the triple option, and with players returning from last year’s team, they should have no trouble shutting down a weak Midshipmen attack again. Even if they do give up 20 points, they should still manage to cover this spread, because the Midshipmen defense has done nothing to prove it can get off the field against a legitimate team.

Navy vs. Memphis best odds

While each of the five major sportsbooks is offering the same spread, DraftKings is offering the best price. Therefore, placing your wager there is a no-brainer.

The prices at FanDuel and BetMGM suggest that this line may move back to -15 before long. We do think that DraftKings is going to catch up to the rest of the major sportsbooks, which means this price at this number will not last for long.

Navy vs. Memphis odds

The Tigers opened as 15.5-point favorites and, despite 69% of wagers placed on them, this line has dropped to 14.5. This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, and it could be cause for concern for Tigers’ backers. Yet, if such significant support continues to come in for the Tigers, we do expect this spread to grow back to where it opened considering how bad the Midshipmen offense has looked thus far.

The total opened at 47.5, and there has been very little movement. Some of the major sportsbooks have dropped this number to 47 or even 46.5, but we don’t expect it to move much from there. At the moment, 52% of wagers back the over. This type of support does not suggest any significant future line movement.
