Neil Warnock to leave Huddersfield after Stoke clash this week

Neil Warnock is to leave his position as Huddersfield Town manager after Wednesday's match at home to Stoke, it has been confirmed.

talkSPORT revealed at the weekend that the 74-year-old would be stepping aside, and the Championship club confirmed on Monday that he will take charge of his final game this week.

The ex-Sheffield United manager was appointed at the John Smith's Stadium in February with the club sitting 23rd in the Championship table.

He defied the odds by keeping the Yorkshire outfit in the second-tier of English football with Huddersfield finishing in 18th spot.

Warnock then penned a one-year deal to keep him at the club until the end of the 2023/24 season.

Hudderfield have won their past two matches, but Terriers chief executive Jake Edwards says the club are now "ready to make a longer-term managerial appointment".

And Warnock and assistant Ronnie Jepson have duly agreed to leave their roles.

American businessman Kevin Nagle took over the club in the summer, and it is understood a mystery overseas boss has already been lined up ahead of Warnock's departure.

"I can confirm Wednesday will be Neil and Ronnie's last game at the football club," said Edwards. "I'd like to express our huge gratitude for everything they've accomplished over the past seven months.

"Few management duos could have kept us in the Championship and they've solidified their legendary status.

"We feel we are ready to move forward with our long-term plans to drive the club back into the Premier League and to make a longer-term managerial appointment.

"We have discussed that and the timing of it with Neil, and after spending time with his coaching staff he has graciously agreed now is the time for that to happen."

Warnock said in a press conference on Monday: "We've actually done what we set out to do really.

"Kevin has a three-year plan to reach the Premier League. I thought it would be about Christmas time, but once they told me they wanted to bring someone in I think they had to move on quickly.

"If you're not wanted you want to go straight away. I don't mean that how it maybe sounds - we always said we'd be straight with each other and that's what we've done.

"I'm disappointed and I'll miss my players."

Warnock initially retired from management in 2022 after leaving Middlesbrough, before returning for his second spell in charge of Huddersfield in February.

He has yet to confirm whether he will seek another challenge, having managed 16 different clubs and overseen eight promotions in his long career.
