Former Spain winger Luis Garcia feels that the 'new Leicester City' Girona can go on to win the LaLiga title this season by pipping Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Girona FC has emerged as a formidable force in La Liga, defying expectations with a remarkable performance in the 2023/24 season.

After securing promotion to Spain's top football division following the 2016-17 season, Girona has experienced a rollercoaster journey, including relegation and subsequent promotion. However, under the stable leadership of President Delf Geli and Sporting Director Quique Cárcel since 2015, along with the full backing of their coach, the club has found an identity and support system that has propelled them to success.

The team, led by manager Miguel ngel Sánchez Muñoz, known as Mchel, has been lauded for playing some of the most attractive football in the league. With a tactical setup that emphasizes possession, attacking play, and exploiting spaces, particularly through a 4-2-3-1 formation, Girona has defied the odds to be level on points with Real Madrid, who are leading the LaLiga at the moment only on goal difference.

Garcia drew parallels between Girona and Leicester City, who had stunned the world by winning the Premier League title in the 2015-16 season.

"Girona have just come out of nowhere," Garcia told Reuters in Bengaluru.

"It's the new Leicester, right? With Leicester I remember the talk was exactly the same -- 'Oh, you know, they will drop.'"

Garcia went on to say that Girona doesn't have any European competitions to be worried about at the moment and can rest and rotate their players when needed.

"Why can't it be Girona?" Garcia said. "They don't have European competition. They don't have many international players."

"They can rest, they can rotate every week, and they can put out their best 11 every single weekend. It isn't easy to beat this team."

"Will they feel the pressure in the last part of the season? They might. But we said the same of Leicester."
