New Year’s resolutions for Ryan Day, Ohio State football team

It's only five days into the new year. Ryan Day and his coaching staff are probably behind on their 2023 New Year's Resolutions.

The Buckeyes' secondary was bad this season and it cost them a chance at the national title. The team had only six scholarship corners on the roster for 2022. They were the worst unit on their team. Jim Knowles signed former Syracuse safety Ja'Had Carter on Wednesday. He will replace Tanner McCalister in a slot/coverage safety spot. Several players from the secondary are considering transferring. JK Johnson entered the transfer portal this week. There might be more players. It's a good thing Knowle signed Carter. Other players with potential to play in the safety position are Lathan Ransom, Sonny Styles, Cam Martinez, Kourt Williams, and Kye Stokes.

The Buckeyes need to add some offensive linemen. Josh Fryer is the only experienced tackle in the locker room. Washington State's Jarrett Kingston is on campus visiting the Buckeye today. Western Kentucky's Gunner Britton is ranked eighth in his class. He has visited Mississippi State. The Buckels need some depth across the offensive line.

Ryan Day needs to pick a starting quarterback by the end of spring practice. Kyle McCord or Devin Brown will eventually get the nod. Devin was the high school quarterback for Marvin Harrison Jr. and is an exceptional athlete. The coach needs a field general in place to keep the team's morale high. The last two seasons have been very difficult for the Buckeyes. They had to choose between Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett. It would be better for everyone if the decision was made sooner rather than later.

Ryan Day has to make the right play-calling decision if he decides to give up the job. Justin Frye should get the promotion to offensive coordinator and play caller. The Buckeye offense is what separates Ryan Day from so many other coaches in the country. If he chooses the wrong play calling successor, the OSU offense backslides and the program suffers. Day dismantled his defensive staff last year. He should also stop giving up so much 30+ yard touchdown plays. Give backups meaningful snaps in blowouts. Beat Michigan. Win the Big Ten. and win the national title. If the team is injured, it means players can't play the rest of the season.
